Fines for unregistered cars in the Czech Republic: new rules for Ukrainian drivers
All Ukrainians who arrive in the Czech Republic will have to register their cars. The relevant rules will come into force in October 2023. Find out more about the fines for driving a car without registration
Czech authorities are planning to oblige drivers from Ukraine to register their own cars. Those who continue to drive with Ukrainian license plates will be fined. Read more about how to avoid trouble in the article below.
Why do you need to register a car in the Czech Republic?
A car register will simplify the process of tracking down traffic violators. According to the Czech Insurance Office, there are more than 38 thousand cars with Ukrainian registration in the country, 4 thousand of which are uninsured. This makes it impossible to track violators.
For example, radar cannot detect license plates, so it is impossible to find out the driver's name and send him a fine.
Currently, drivers must register their vehicles only after 180 days in the country. However, this rule applies to Ukrainians with a residence permit. Refugees are exempt from registration and technical inspection.
Car registration in the Czech Republic for Ukrainians
It is necessary to register from October 2023. Refugees who will be granted temporary protection in October will have a week to complete the necessary documents for the car.
What are the fines for driving a car without registration in the Czech Republic?
Evasion of registration will result in a fine of 30 thousand Czech crowns (51,740 hryvnias). Fines will be issued starting in January 2024.
In addition, the Czech Republic will increase liability for unregistered carriers. Such violators may be imprisoned for up to 8 years.
Mandatory requirements for cars in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic strictly controls drivers and obliges them to follow clear rules. In particular, all cars with Ukrainian registration are required to have an insurance policy. "Green Card" is the most convenient and reliable way to insure your car and avoid fines. It is easy to apply for it online here.
Please note that cars with and without registration must have:
- An emergency stop sign and a tow rope;
- a spare tire with a tread depth of at least 4 mm;
- the UA;
- European first aid kit
- fire extinguisher;
- a set of light bulbs for headlights and lanterns.
We remind you! The Czech government has made changes to the residence of Ukrainian citizens on its territory. In particular, starting from April 1, free accommodation and insurance will be limited. Read more about the changes here.
