Why are Ukrainian refugees being evicted from hotels in Cyprus?

3,000 Ukrainian refugees are currently living in local hotels in Cyprus. Recently, the country's authorities informed Ukrainians that they must leave the hotels before the start of the holiday season, namely by 31 May.

This is supported by a law passed in February 2022. Also, according to this law, Ukrainian refugees who arrive in Cyprus from 1 March 2023 will have the right to stay in local hotels in the country for no more than 6 months.

The mechanism of actions after eviction from hotels: where to seek help

It has become known that the relevant Cypriot authorities have already started implementing a plan to find jobs for able-bodied Ukrainians currently residing in Cyprus.

After being evicted from hotels, Ukrainian refugees can apply to the Benefits Management Service of the Deputy Minister of Social Security and apply for a housing subsidy.

It is also noted that Ukrainians have the right to apply to the Cypriot employment services for employment.

In response to this situation, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Cyprus has scheduled meetings with employers in the tourism industry to discuss employment options for refugees.

The hotels that will continue to host Ukrainians after the holiday season will be selected through a tender.

Number of Ukrainian refugees in Cyprus

The EU statistical agency Eurostat reports that Cyprus has become the country with the largest number of registered refugees granted temporary protection status relative to the country's population in the EU. In Cyprus, there are 1.1 Ukrainians with temporary protection status per 1,000 inhabitants. The Czech Republic ranks second in Europe in terms of this indicator, with 0.9 Ukrainians with temporary protection per 1,000 inhabitants.

We remind you! Refugees from Ukraine who temporarily reside in Cyprus are entitled to financial assistance. Read more about who can apply for the funds and what is required for this in our material.
