Ukraine plans to expand the network of checkpoints on its borders with the European Union. This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
Expansion of checkpoints with the EU: what is known
Currently, there are 21 checkpoints for vehicular traffic on the borders with Europe, three of which were opened during the full-scale invasion.
In particular, the official announced the launch of nine more new checkpoints and the modernization of 13 existing ones.
The main focus will be on the border with Poland. Ukraine has signed an agreement to receive a €160 million soft loan from Polish partners to reconstruct roads, checkpoints, and purchase scanners.

There are plans to create single checkpoints
In addition, the Prime Minister said that Ukraine, together with Poland, is implementing the idea of creating a unified system of checkpoints between the countries. The first pilot project of such joint control will be implemented on the Polish-Ukrainian border.
As part of the project, one checkpoint will be set up where representatives of both countries will work. This will help achieve deeper integration with the European space, speed up logistics processes and reduce the risk of corruption.
He also noted that Ukraine plans to implement a similar initiative on the border with Romania. A corresponding proposal has already been sent to the Romanian side.
In particular, it is planned to jointly develop access roads and railway infrastructure, as well as simplify border control with Romania. Read more about the opening of a new checkpoint on the border between Ukraine and Romania here.
In addition, the establishment of joint customs and border control with the EU countries is one of the key goals.
