The French Minister of Transport, Clement Bon, has announced the preparation of a proposal aimed at establishing a minimum price for air travel within the European Union in order to combat climate change. Find out more about the planned changes to airfares
The French government intends to set minimum airfares. The corresponding initiative of the government will have the greatest impact on European low-cost carriers, which sometimes offer tickets for 10 euros. This was reported by Euronews.
France to set cheap airfares: what is known
According to the French Minister of Transport, Clement Bon, the decision is aimed at regulating minimum prices for air travel within the European Union.
In this way, France is directing its efforts to combat climate change.
It is noted that Minister Bon plans to submit his proposal to establish minimum airfares to his colleagues from the European Union in the coming days. However, it is not yet clear whether other EU countries will support this initiative.
France believes that selling airplane tickets for 10 euros, especially in the context of the environmental transition, is no longer acceptable. According to the French minister, these prices do not reflect the cost to the environment.
The government is calling for additional taxation of activities that have a negative impact on the environment in order to allocate more resources for France's environmental transformation.
The minister also plans to increase the tax on flights departing from France and to direct the funds raised to the development of rail transport.

Who will be most affected by the changes?
Such an initiative by France will have the greatest impact on popular European low-cost carriers, which are famous for their low prices for popular routes, but also contribute to significant greenhouse gas emissions.
That is why France is actively promoting the development of rail transport and in May restricted domestic flights for short distances where the train journey takes less than two hours.
Under the new rules, such short flights between Paris and cities such as Marseille, Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux were banned and can now only be traveled by train.
