How did Ukrainians change the world's perception of charity during the war?
Charity plays a significant social role in every country, but during the war, Ukrainians turned this concept into a real phenomenon. Learn more about how and why Ukrainians surprised the world
On September 5, the world celebrates the International Day of Philanthropy. This event was established by the UN General Assembly. The date is intended to draw public attention to the importance of charity and volunteering. It is also very symbolic that the date of the Charity Day coincides with the Day of Remembrance of Teresa of Calcutta, a missionary of the Roman Catholic Church.
Charity in Ukraine is regulated by the law "On Charitable Activities and Charitable Organizations," which defines "the general principles of charitable activities, provides legal regulation of relations in society aimed at developing charitable activities, promoting humanism and mercy, and ensures favorable conditions for the establishment and operation of charitable organizations."
However, the full-scale russian invasion has caused significant changes not only in the usual life of Ukrainians, but also in the attitude of Ukrainian citizens towards charity and volunteering. It is also important that these changes not only affected Ukrainian society, but also attracted the attention of people from all over the world, forcing them to look at charity from a completely new angle.
How has charity reached a new level thanks to Ukrainians?
Cohesion is definitely an important factor that helped Ukraine to withstand and deter the enemy when it tried to break through on the outskirts of the capital, and today it helps to de-occupy Ukrainian territories in the South and East of the country step by step.
What does charity and unity have to do with it? However, the actions of Ukrainian volunteers and ordinary people have led to a rethinking of charity in the world. And today, volunteering plays a key role in this terrible war.
Thus, the main factor that shook the world's perception of charity was the phenomenon of Ukrainian donations. Foreigners still don't understand how people in a country engulfed in war can raise billions of hryvnias in a matter of days not just for "good causes," but for attack and maritime drones, satellites, military vehicles and equipment, ammunition and other weapons.
Moreover, the number of people in Ukraine who put their main efforts and time into volunteer activities is probably unmatched by any other country in the world. Ukrainian volunteers are able to find anything, anywhere and anytime. Practice has shown that nothing is impossible for them.
Thus, Ukrainian volunteers and ordinary Ukrainians have become a reliable rear guard for the brave Armed Forces of Ukraine. And this cohesion, which surprised the world in the first days of the russian invasion, continues to unite society, becoming a driving force for good deeds.

The contribution of foreigners to Ukraine's victory
A large number of foreign citizens not only watch Ukrainians with admiration, but also join in to help and support Ukraine.
Some stood up to defend the country's territorial integrity and independence by joining the International Legion. Some came to Ukraine to volunteer and help with their own hands. Others use their own resources outside of Ukraine and help with organizational issues, logistics, refugee shelters and other important matters. Some come to Ukraine to get to know the country and support Ukrainians. Others regularly donate to the Armed Forces.
Any support, even moral support, plays an important role in this war. After all, a simple reminder that the world stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine gives strength and inspiration to move forward.
That is why we want to thank everyone who devotes attention, time, money and other resources to help and support Ukraine! The contribution of each of you is a step towards a common victory!
Ukrainians have already changed the world's perception of charity, and we sincerely believe that this trend will continue. Cohesion and unity are the weapons that bring about positive changes in the world and help Ukraine move step by step to victory!
