The European Union has suspended the launch of a new border control system tentatively until 2025. Find out more about when the system is planned to be launched and what is standing in the way
The European Union has officially postponed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) until May 2025 due to unforeseen difficulties that have become a source of further possible delays. This is reported by schengenvisainfo.com.
Initially, this initiative was planned for mid-2024.

ETIAS: what can stand in the way of launching the system
It is noted that the entry/exit system (EES), which is an important component of EU border security, is facing similar delays. The EES is designed to register third-country travelers when they cross the EU's external border and is closely linked to ETIAS.
While EES can work independently, ETIAS cannot work without EES.
Anita Hipper, the European Commission's spokesperson for Home Affairs, Migration and Internal Security, emphasized that ETIAS can only start working five to six months after the launch of the Schengen area.

In particular, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the new ETIAS launch date of 2025, but did not provide an exact timeframe. The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration also confirmed this information and indicated that further delays are possible, which could lead to a postponement of the launch date to May 2025.
As for the EES, its implementation remains scheduled for 2024, and a specific date should be announced in the coming months.
Despite suggestions, including from the Belgian delegation in July, that ETIAS could be launched separately in May 2024, nothing is known at this time.
We remind you! The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) stipulates that all visitors to EU countries outside the EU will have to register online in advance. In particular, starting in mid-2024, Ukrainians, like other foreigners, will be required to obtain a travel authorization to enter the EU. Learn more about how ETIAS will work in our article.
