Britain announced the transfer of the Terrahawk Paladin at the last Ramstein convention on October 11. Then the country's Defense Minister Grant Shapps said that he would send Ukraine a new aid package worth $123 million.

What is known about this super-modern development?

Terrahawk Paladin is a modular anti-aircraft system for the destruction of air targets. This weapon was presented to the public in 2022.

The anti-aircraft system is a remote-controlled modular system for close-range defense against land, air and sea threats. The Terrahawk Paladin can be deployed as a single system for point defense or part of a network in an air defense system to defend a larger area.

And so, the Terrahawk Paladin is a remotely operated 30mm Mk44 Busmaster II cannon that can use programmable burst munitions. The system can use rocket armament and c-UAS (Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems) laser guidance to destroy drones.

There is also a target tracking function using artificial intelligence.

The anti-aircraft gun also has 4 proprietary radar locators (radars) on a single mast, a SATOS optical targeting station with thermal imager and laser rangefinder. The fire control system supports auto-targeting.

How will the Terrahawk Paladin help Ukraine?

Taking into account the fact that recently russian troops have started to rely on drones rather than missiles when shelling Ukrainian territory, the anti-aircraft system will be very useful for the AFU, especially in the conditions of winter strikes on energy infrastructure.

The British installation is an improved version of the solution that Ukraine has so far used most massively to combat russian drones. We are talking about the so-called "Shahed catchers." These are mobile groups of Ukrainian military personnel who travel in specially equipped pickup trucks, in the back of which a machine gun on a turret is installed.

The task of such groups is to identify and destroy drones.

Due to artificial intelligence, the system can distinguish flying objects, including birds. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine emphasized that Terrahawk Paladin will provide significant tactical and strategic advantages over fixed air defense systems.

We remind you! In Ukraine there is a special offer, which gives the opportunity to ordinary citizens to inform the AFU about the flight of missiles and drones. What is the essence of the application and how it helps Ukrainian defenders, read here.
