What's happening in the Zaporizhzhia sector, in Avdiivka and on the left bank of the Dnipro?
The occupying army has been storming the outskirts of Avdiivka for several weeks now, and Ukrainian heavy equipment has been spotted on the left bank of the Kherson region. Find out what's happening at the front and who is taking the initiative and advancing
The situation at the front remains dynamic despite the onset of cold weather, but the maneuvers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are now tactical rather than strategic. At the same time, in his latest interview, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, said that the summer counteroffensive did not have the desired results for obvious reasons, and now Ukraine is moving to a positional struggle.
We have previously discussed whether Ukraine can win a positional war of attrition, and today we will see what is happening at the front and whether the Ukrainian army is making progress in the south and east of the country.
Is the russian offensive near Avdiivka a success?
In early October, the russian army launched a massive offensive near Avdiivka, trying to break through the Ukrainian army's defense and surround the town. The russian army has already lost more than 7,000 soldiers, over a hundred tanks and more than 200 pieces of armored vehicles in this area of the front, but has not achieved any strategic success.
According to the General Staff and a report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the occupiers have had some success in the area of Stepove. In total, the city is still 7 kilometers away from being surrounded, so the threat remains. However, it is too early to talk about the outcome of this battle, because after a month of active assaults, russia has not even improved its tactical position, having deployed an unprecedented amount of manpower and equipment.

It is important to note that the capture of Avdiivka does not make any military sense, as the town has no strategic importance. However, it is likely that russia is trying to artificially create a "victory" because it has been trying to "take" this city for 9 years.

What's happening on the left bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast?
Recently, it became known that the Ukrainian army launched an offensive on the left bank of the Dnipro River near Kherson. Ukrainian authorities and military representatives do not comment on the maneuvers of the Armed Forces in this area of the front, but according to ISW reports, the Ukrainian army has gained a foothold on the left bank and is gradually expanding its bridgehead.
Moreover, on November 8, it became known that the Ukrainian army had moved armored vehicles to the left bank of the Kherson region. Analysts of the American Institute note that the number of deployed equipment was larger than before. currently, up to 300 Ukrainian military (≈ a battalion) can operate on the left bank of the Dnipro.

At the same time, Ukrainian soldiers are performing tasks on a fairly wide section of the frontline: from Oleshky to the village of Krynky (the distance between them is more than 30 kilometers). Therefore, it is impossible to say for sure where the breakthrough or offensive is expected. Analysts note that so far, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to push the enemy away from the Dnipro River itself.
Has the counteroffensive in the Zaporizhzhia sector been completed?
Currently, there are no significant advances on the southern front in Zaporizhzhia region, as the battle for initiative continues. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to find a weakness in the defense and attack, while the russian army is trying to counterattack from time to time. However, both sides have not yet achieved strategic success and are fighting at the tactical level.
At the same time, there have been no statements that the counteroffensive is over or that Ukraine is surrendering, and even the russian offensive in the east did not force Ukraine to pull back from the Zaporizhzhya direction. But so far, no major breakthroughs are expected on either side.
