In 2024, some European cities are still implementing free public transportation initiatives. Find out more about which cities not only express solidarity with Ukrainians but also provide certain benefits
European capitals continue to support Ukrainians who have become refugees as a result of the war in Ukraine. In particular, some of them have decided to extend free public transportation throughout 2024 to provide an additional level of support and comfort to Ukrainians.
Here's a look at which European cities have extended free travel.
Free public transportation for Ukrainians in Europe 2024
The capitals of Lithuania and Hungary are expressing solidarity with Ukrainians and taking steps to facilitate their adaptation to the new conditions. In Budapest, this initiative is valid until March 31, 2024. To benefit from the privilege, refugees only need to present a Ukrainian document confirming their identity, such as a Ukrainian passport (foreign or domestic), a residence permit in Ukraine, a student card or any other document confirming the residence of foreigners in Ukraine.
Hungary has also joined this proactive step by allowing Ukrainians to travel free of charge on some rail routes within the country. Although this benefit applied to all trains in Hungary until September 15, 2022, it remains partial.

It is important to emphasize that the Vilnius authorities have extended the 100% discount on city trolleybuses and buses for Ukrainians throughout 2024. This initiative is part of a general set of measures that provide support to Ukrainians in Lithuania, including workers in education, culture and social spheres.
The city authorities consider free travel to be an important element of support, contributing to convenience and accessibility for those who were forced to leave their homeland due to russian aggression.
