On average, about 500 Ukrainians arrive in Ireland every week, even as conditions for refugees have become more difficult. This was reported by The Irish Times.

Such data indicate that even after the announcement of stricter rules of stay, many Ukrainians continue to seek asylum in the country.

We will tell you what has changed in Ireland and what are the current conditions for Ukrainians who continue to arrive in 2024 in the article.

How many Ukrainians are seeking protection in Ireland?

According to the Department of Justice of Ireland, between November 1 and December 20, 2023, 3,740 Ukrainians arrived in the country seeking temporary protection. During this time, average weekly arrivals ranged from 484 to 702 people.

The number of Ukrainian refugees arriving in Ireland has remained stable, ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 per month throughout 2023. So far, 102,339 Ukrainian citizens have been granted temporary protection.

The Irish government began to express outrage over the housing crisis in the fall of 2022 due to the growing number of refugees, which led to a shortage of places to resettle them. Therefore, the authorities have developed a mechanism to reduce support for migrants from Ukraine in order to make the country less attractive to new refugees, but the situation has not changed much.

What changes can Ukrainians expect in Ireland?

Since the beginning of 2024, Ireland has been making significant changes to benefits and living conditions for Ukrainian refugees. In December, the government announced a significant reduction in benefits for those in public housing, from €220 to €38.80 per week.

After Ukrainians leave public housing and start renting their own housing, they will be able to apply for the full amount of social assistance.

It has also been decided that free housing from the state will be available to Ukrainians only for a period of up to 90 days.

These changes will come into force on January 29 and will not affect those Ukrainians who have already been granted temporary protection in Ireland.
