Getting a driver's license in Poland: how to pass the exam in Ukrainian?
From now on, it is possible to take the theoretical test for a driver's license in Ukrainian in Poland. At the same time, the practical exam is offered with an interpreter. Find out what are the conditions for obtaining a driver's license and the cost in 2024
Starting in 2024, Ukrainians in three Polish cities will be able to take the theory test for a driver's license in their native language. According to yavp.pl. with reference to adiokrakow.pl, the theory in Ukrainian is available only to those who plan to obtain a category B driver's license.
This opportunity was introduced by the Małopolska Road Traffic Organization (MORD) in view of the large number of Ukrainians in Poland. And according to expectations, this option will be in great demand, as many citizens have postponed taking the theoretical course due to lack of knowledge of Polish.
In which cities in Poland can I take the driving test in Ukrainian?
The opportunity to take the theory exam in Ukrainian is available in Tarnów, Kraków, and Nowy Sościen. RBK-Ukraine notes that this option is also available in: Warsaw, Lublin, Zielona Góra, Olsztyn, Gdańsk, and Białystok.
At the same time, Pawel Gurgul, director of the MORD department in Tarnów, noted that the practical exam will still have to be taken in Polish and recommended that Ukrainians use an interpreter if necessary. However, according to him, such a need will arise extremely rarely, because the examiner's instructions are understandable even for people with a basic knowledge of Polish.
How to get a driver's license in Poland: terms and conditions
In order to undergo the training process and obtain a driving license in Poland, a foreigner (refugee from Ukraine/citizen of another country outside the EU) must meet two conditions
1. the person has reached the established age (14, 16, 18, 21, 24 years - depending on the category);
2. the person has proof of residence in Poland for more than 185 days.
If these two conditions are met, you can register, take training and exams (theoretical and practical) to obtain a driver's license. What does this process look like in detail?
Step 1. Obtaining a PKK number
Obtaining a Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę at the Urząd komunikacji can be conditionally called registration of intentions to take training. It usually takes one business day to receive the number. To obtain a PKK, a foreigner must submit:
– an application form (you can download the Wniosek o wydanie prawa jazdy here);
– an identity document;
– proof of the right to stay in the country for more than 6 months (residence card, visa, etc.);
– photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm);
– a medical certificate (issued by the Gabinet medycyny pracy in most polyclinics in Poland; the cost of the service is 200 zł).
Step 2. Choose a school and take the course
The choice of a driving school depends on the location, working hours, training periods, and the request of the foreigner who intends to obtain a driving license. There are no specific rules.
The minimum training period is 30 academic hours of theory and 30 hours of practice.
The cost of training depends on the region and the prestige of the school - the average price is from 1900 to 2900 zł (excluding other expenses).

Step 3. Passing the WORD exam
To obtain a driving license, you need to pass two exams at the Wojewódzki Osrodek Ruchu Drogowego (WORD). The same documents are required for admission to the exam as for obtaining a PKK number.
Theory
– Waiting time after registration: 4-5 days
– Price: 50 zł
– Format: test in electronic format (maximum number of points - 74, passing threshold - 68 points).
If the theoretical exam is not passed on the first try, the candidate has the right to register for a retake (in some cities, the second attempt is more expensive). It is also worth considering that the certificate you receive after the exam obliges you to take the practical part of the exam within the next 6 months. Otherwise, the results will be canceled.
Practice
– Waiting time after registration: 1-2 weeks in large cities
– Cost: 200-250 zł (depending on the category)
– Format: testing of knowledge and skills in preparing a car for driving, as well as driving skills on the test site and in the city
Since 2024, the rules for conducting the practical test have changed: now the examiner does not report any mistakes made until the end of the exam (even if the driver has already failed the test).
Step 4. Obtaining a license at the Urząd komunikacji
After both exams are successfully passed, the driver can obtain a driving license at the Urząd komunikacji. To do this, you need to submit a package of documents (as when obtaining a PKK number) and supplement it with certificates of exam results, as well as pay a state fee of PLN 100.50. For an additional fee, you can fill out a special questionnaire and order the production of an international driver's license instead of a Polish license.
Remember! In order to drive freely in Poland and 48 other countries of the world with a car with Ukrainian registration, the driver must have a Green Card insurance policy. The absence or delay of insurance is fraught not only with fines that are several dozen times higher than the cost of the insurance policy for a year, but also with the seizure of the car and deportation from the country with a subsequent ban on entry. You can take out insurance for the required period on our website. Read more about the amount of fines in Europe for not having a Green Card here.
We remind you! Unfortunately, no one is immune from road accidents, as any situation can happen on the road through the fault of another driver. Read how to act in the event of an accident in Poland, who to call, what to record and what documents to draw up in our previous article.
