From April 1, cars with Ukrainian license plates will be fined in Germany: what you should know (updated)
Since the beginning of April, the German authorities have been imposing fines on cars with Ukrainian registration in the country. Learn more about the requirements for obtaining local registration and license plates for your car in Germany
Please note! Germany has agreed to extend the procedure for exemption from the registration requirement for Ukrainian vehicles. Now the validity period will be extended for another 6 months - until September 30, 2024.
In Germany, starting from April 1, 2024, owners of vehicles with Ukrainian license plates who have been in the country for a year but have not obtained German registration will be fined.
The innovation comes into force in connection with the end of the transition period on March 31, 2024, when Ukrainian refugees in Germany were allowed to drive with Ukrainian registration without replacing it with local license plates.
It is emphasized that now Ukrainian citizens must register their cars in the local region and obtain German license plates.
What are the penalties for cars with Ukrainian license plates in Germany?
Failure to comply with the requirements will be considered an administrative violation, which is punishable by a fine of EUR 70 and 1 penalty point for the driver. This may lead to an increase in the cost of car insurance.
A driver who accumulates 8 penalty points may lose his or her driver's license.

How do I register my own car in Germany?
The procedure for registering a car in Germany is carried out through a special government agency - Zulassungsbehörde or its equivalent. Owners are advised to contact them for full information about the procedure.
The required documents should include:
• an application;
• a valid foreign passport;
• technical passport (Hauptuntersuchung);
• a valid car insurance policy (motor third party liability insurance);
• a certificate of successful technical inspection.
After registering the car, the owner receives a vehicle registration certificate and new German license plates.
According to the law, each car owner is obliged to pay a tax, the amount of which depends on the vehicle's parameters (approximately UAH 200 per year).
Remember that in Germany, every motorist must have a motor vehicle liability insurance policy that covers the driver's liability to third parties in the event of an accident. Ukrainians staying in the country for less than 1 year should use the international Green Card policy.
How to buy a Green Card at a cheaper price?
To save money on the purchase of compulsory international insurance, take out a policy in advance. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can purchase a Green Card for the dates you need and choose the validity period of your car insurance. To take out a policy in advance, just indicate the date of the insurance start date you need.
And if you take out a Green Card insurance policy with a validity period of 1 month or more, you are guaranteed to receive fuel as a gift. For more information, please contact our managers.

We remind you! Ukrainians who have entered Germany by their own car and stay in the country for more than a year are required to register and undergo a vehicle inspection.
