EU extends temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine: important details
Ukraine and the European Commission have agreed to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU. The status will be reviewed only after the security situation in the country improves. Learn more about the changes in obtaining temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU
Recently, an agreement was reached between Ukraine and the European Commission to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees in Europe. The status can be reviewed only if the security situation in Ukraine improves, but this is currently impossible. This news was announced by Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, at the International Summit of Cities and Regions.
Earlier, we also talked about the difference between international and temporary protection status.
What is known about the extension of temporary protection status for Ukrainians?
Olga Stefanishyna said that she has been in constant dialogue with EU Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs Ilva Johansson since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Every 3 months, a special commission assesses the security situation in the country. The issue of returning Ukrainians and extending the status of temporary protection has been discussed many times. However, during the last conversation, it was decided to extend the temporary protection status.
The Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration emphasized that the security factor was the most important factor in the decision. As soon as the situation changes, the status of temporary protection will be reviewed and Ukrainians will return home smoothly. This is the agreement between Ukraine and the European Commission. But now it is impossible.
It was also agreed that the issues of mobilization, the register of persons liable for military service and the status of temporary protection are not related to each other. Ensuring the registration of persons liable for military service is an internal process of Ukraine, carried out through a series of diplomatic steps through diplomatic and consular work.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the European Union has activated the Temporary Protection Directive, according to which refugees from Ukraine have the right to stay legally in the EU and receive basic social services: health care, education, and the right to employment. The document is valid until March 2025 with the possibility of extension.
