In accordance with Austrian legislation, travel to the country requires compliance with the requirements for the visa procedure and the issuance of an appropriate health insurance policy. When planning your trip to the country, find out what type of visa you need to get to enter the country and what the insurance requirements are. By following these rules, you can easily visit Austria.

What are the requirements for an insurance policy for entering Austria?

Insurance requirements in Austria vary depending on the planned activity in the country and length of stay.

Tourist visas

Travel insurance is included in the list of mandatory documents for obtaining a visa to Austria, as well as for visa-free travel.

It is necessary to issue a policy for the entire period of stay in the country. In addition, it must meet the following requirements:

- The amount covered is well over €30,000, with the guarantee that any recovery and repatriation costs and costs of treatment for the illness from COVID-19 will be covered.

- Insurance covers a wide range of risks (visits to doctors, hospital treatment, medicines, etc.).

- The territory of distribution is not only Austria, but also all countries of the Schengen zone.

Student visas

Foreign students are required to take out a health insurance policy before traveling to Austria.

Students participating in exchange programs and planning to stay in Austria for up to 3 months must take out a regular travel insurance policy.

If you are getting an international education at one of the universities in Austria, then you need to get a category D visa and purchase a private health insurance policy to move.

It is important that the amount of risk coverage exceeds 30,000 euros and that the policy is valid for the entire period of study in Austria.

Work visa

- The Red-White-Red Card is a work permit and residence permit that allows its holder to stay and work in Austria for up to 2 years. Usually, highly qualified specialists who have a job offer from an Austrian employer can apply for a permit.

- The EU Blue Card is a type of work permit that is not based on a points system. In order to receive an EU Blue Card, you need to meet several criteria: to have completed a higher education at an accredited university (at least a three-year program) and to have a salary of at least 1.5 times the annual salary in Austria.

- A jobseeker's visa allows you to stay in Austria for 6 months while you look for work. Please note that only highly qualified individuals are eligible to apply for a job seeker visa. Only those who score 70 or more points according to the point system will receive a jobseeker's visa.

Medical insurance for a work visa in Austria

Obtaining a work visa and residence permit depends on providing proof of health insurance. Applicants for any D visa must have health insurance.

Foreign health insurance is a type of private health insurance. This is a temporary solution for people moving to Austria It has much better coverage than travel insurance. In particular, it covers more diseases, often covers dental care and has a longer validity period. When you start working in Austria, you can switch to public insurance.

Researchers and scientific staff

Researchers who are employees of an Austrian research institution are covered by compulsory state health insurance, in addition, specialists are provided with accident insurance and pension insurance, provided that the employment exceeds the marginal income threshold (€518.44/month, as of for 2024). Otherwise, the specialist must have a private health insurance policy for the entire period of stay in Austria.

Refugees under the temporary protection program

Ukrainians moving to Austria under the temporary protection program are not required to have insurance to enter the country. However, this document is highly desirable.

Of course, refugees who have arrived in Austria receive medical care within the framework of protection, which will give you the opportunity to visit doctors for free. However, the first time after arrival, in particular during the registration of documents and medical insurance, it is better to be sure that in the event of an emergency or illness, you will be able to receive guaranteed assistance in a language you understand. Also, taking into account the high cost of medical services in Austria, an insurance policy can save you a lot of money in case of illness. Therefore, before traveling, we advise you to purchase a travel insurance policy.
