In July 2024, strikes by civil aviation workers are planned in Italy, Ireland, and the UK. Find out more about the problems this may cause for tourists
The summer vacation season traditionally complicates transportation in Europe. The increase in the number of tourists causes long lines at airports, delays and cancellations.
The situation becomes even worse when transport infrastructure workers go on strike, demanding higher wages and better working conditions.
Such strikes are usually announced in advance, allowing tourists to adjust their plans. According to Euronews Travel, in July 2024, civil aviation strikes are expected in Italy, Ireland, and the UK, which could significantly affect transportation in the regions.
Earlier we reported that Italy has launched additional trains to popular seaside resorts to facilitate travel.
Airport staff strike in Italy
In Italy, unionized airport workers are planning a nationwide strike on July 5, 2024. This will cause disruption to airports in Rome, Venice, Milan, Bologna, Crotone, Lamezia Terme and Reggio Calabria throughout the day. As a result, significant flight disruptions are possible, which may affect the plans of many tourists.

Pilots' strike in Ireland
On June 26, the pilots of Irish airline Aer Lingus launched an indefinite strike based on the "work by the rules" principle. This means that they work only during their normal working hours and refuse to change their schedules. As a result, about 400 flights were canceled by July 7, causing significant inconvenience to passengers.

Strike by the staff of Gatwick Airport in London
About 300 security and passenger services employees at London Gatwick Airport are planning strikes from July 12 to 14 and from July 18 to 21. This may lead to delays in baggage screening and affect passengers requiring special assistance. Tourists are advised to arrive at airports in advance to avoid problems.
In addition, this summer's intense heat is also affecting flight punctuality, forcing airlines to delay or even cancel flights. To protect themselves, tourists are advised to choose the earliest flights.
