The demand for used and new electric cars is growing every year, as bringing an electric car from China or Europe is a very popular service among Ukrainians. Thus, since the beginning of 2024, a record number of cars with electric motors have been imported into Ukraine. The article below describes the overall market dynamics, the top electric cars in Ukraine, and demand growth statistics.

Electric cars in Ukraine: import statistics in 2024

According to Opendatabot, 20,785 electric cars have been imported into Ukraine since the beginning of 2024, which is a record number. It is noted that the overall demand for electric vehicles has increased by 2.1 times over the year. Electric cars account for 12.9% of the total number of cars imported to Ukraine. Thus, in 2024, 5.5 thousand new and 15.9 thousand used electric cars were imported.

The following regions of Ukraine became the leaders in the import of electric cars:

● Lviv region - 13.5% of the total number of imported cars;

● Kyiv - 13.1%;
● Odesa region - 9.3%.

What is the situation in Europe on the electric car market?

In general, electric cars are popular all over the world. As of 2023, 120,926 electric cars were registered in Europe, accounting for 11.9% of the total number of registered cars.

However, Europeans have recently faced some difficulties when buying cars, as on 4 July, the European Commission introduced additional countervailing duties on the import of Chinese electric vehicles. This decision was based on the results of an investigation that confirmed that Chinese manufacturers receive unfair government subsidies, which harms European manufacturers.

The imposed duties vary depending on the manufacturer. For BYD, they amount to 17.4%, for Geely - 19.9%, and for SAIC - 37.6%. These duties will be in effect for five years and can be revised if the situation changes.

What is the reason for the demand for electric cars in Ukraine?

Firstly, electric vehicles in Ukraine are exempt from most taxes. Unlike petrol and diesel cars, electric cars are not subject to VAT, except for a small excise duty. This makes them much cheaper to buy and operate.

Second, petrol and diesel prices in Ukraine are much higher than electricity prices. Even taking into account the cost of charging an electric vehicle, electricity costs are still lower. By the way, we told you how to find electric charging stations in Ukraine in this article.

When buying any car, remember that you must take out insurance. This applies to both new cars bought abroad and used cars imported from neighbouring countries or the United States. In order to bring a car from Europe to Ukraine, you need to obtain a Green Card, because without it, it is forbidden to drive on the roads of the EU countries. Read here to find out why you need a Green Card and how it works.

Car insurance is also mandatory in Ukraine. Motor third party liability insurance (MTPL) is a Ukrainian insurance policy that compensates victims of road accidents. Therefore, when importing a car from Europe, you need to take this point into account and immediately take out Ukrainian motor third party liability insurance.

You can apply for Green Card and CTP insurance online in 5 minutes on the Visit Ukraine portal. Remember that the issued insurance policy is your guarantee of compensation for damages in the event of an accident.

Just a reminder. According to recent research, prices for used cars in Europe have fallen significantly. Read here how this trend may affect the car market in Ukraine.
