Finland will tighten the rules for entering the country from September 1: what will change
New rules for foreigners intending to cross the Finnish border will come into effect in early September. The changes will affect both potential migrants and those already in the country. Read more about the update
On September 1, new legal regulations will come into force in Finland, which will significantly tighten the requirements for entry and stay in the country. This was announced by the government of the country.
Finland tightens entry rules: main changes
The new law on foreigners will clearly define the situations in which a residence permit will be denied. These situations include:
• Providing false information
• Illegal stay in Finland
• Illegal employment
• Arranged marriage
The Ministry of the Interior of Finland explained that the existing provisions of the law are open to different interpretations. The new regulations will be more specific and unambiguous, which will contribute to greater transparency and efficiency in the decision-making process.
Restrictions for applicants for international protection
An important aspect of the new rules is that applicants for international protection or persons whose application has been rejected will no longer be able to obtain a residence permit on the basis of work, self-employment or study. This aims to prevent cases where an applicant applies for asylum solely in order to find a job or study in Finland.

What is the purpose of the reform?
These changes are part of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's government program to tighten immigration policy. The reform is aimed at achieving the goal of rapid departure of those who have been denied asylum.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb will formally approve these provisions on July 5.
Thus, the new legal norms are intended to strengthen Finland's immigration policy and ensure greater efficiency in regulating issues related to the entry and stay of foreigners in the country.
