With the advent of the new academic year, Ukrainian schools will start teaching a course of social and emotional education called "Lessons of Happiness". The first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, has explained what Ukrainian schoolchildren will be taught at these lessons.

"Lessons of Happiness" is a Ukrainian adaptation of the American course Well Being, taking into account Ukrainian realities.

This programme is aimed at developing knowledge and skills that will help Ukrainian children to create a "happy, meaningful and productive life".

What will be taught at the Lessons of Happiness?

- To build relationships with people;

- creativity and the ability to be the creator of one's life;

- "human studies" - understanding what it means to be a human being;

- love, empathy, dignity and freedom;

- wisdom and the ability to reflect on life and experience;

- the values of life;

- emotional competence - the importance of empathy, emotional intelligence, and the ability to understand emotional needs;

- mental health and how to take care of it.

"We live in times when such skills are as important as knowing maths or biology. Especially the skills of caring for mental health". - Elena Zelenskaya explained.

The course will be implemented from September 2024. By then, its content should be adapted to the peculiarities of Ukrainian children and their needs.
