According to a study by the Institute for Research on the Labor Market and Professions in Nuremberg, only 27% of refugees from Ukraine had jobs in Germany as of the beginning of the year. However, according to tagesspiegel, this country is in the middle of the list among the EU member states. What is the situation in the EU with employment of Ukrainians, which countries are leading in terms of employment of refugees and why - we will tell you further in the article.

Countries leading in employment of Ukrainian refugees

Lithuania leads the way in Europe in terms of employment of Ukrainian refugees with a rate of 57%. It is followed by Denmark (53%) and Poland (48%). These countries demonstrate high employment rates due to the high demand for low-skilled labor, where language and other requirements are less stringent.

Countries with the lowest employment rates

Finland, Norway, Romania, and Spain have the lowest employment rates for Ukrainian refugees - less than 20%. However, it is noted that this may be due to the more difficult economic situation and high unemployment in these countries, which makes it difficult for newcomers to integrate into the labor market.

We have previously talkedmore about the problems with employment for Ukrainians in the Baltic States, as well as in Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and other countries.

What is the situation with employment of Ukrainians in Germany?

Germany adheres to the “language first” principle, which implies a longer-term integration approach. According to IAB researcher Therese Koch, this may reduce employment in the short term, which is what we are seeing in the market now, but this approach ensures better integration in the medium and long term. At the same time, Germany's experience with refugees between 2013 and 2019 shows that investing in education increases the likelihood of employment and the sustainability of integration.

Please note! Recently it became known that the conditions for employment in Germany will be changed for Ukrainian refugees. Read this article to find out how this will affect benefits.

Impact of economic and other conditions on employment

According to IAB department manager Yulia Kosyakova, in countries with rising unemployment, competition for jobs is higher, which complicates the integration of Ukrainian refugees. For example, countries with high unemployment rates have significantly lower employment rates among refugees, as locals are also actively looking for work.

Instead, researchers note that countries with better childcare conditions, such as Denmark and the Netherlands, demonstrate higher employment rates due to the creation of favorable conditions for working parents.

At the same time, one of the factors that makes it easier to find a job is English. After all, a good knowledge of English greatly facilitates integration in a new place.
