In order to avoid unpleasant situations on the roads in your destination country, you should familiarise yourself with the current rules for car drivers in advance. There are some simple parking laws in Sweden that you should know in order to avoid fines. We will tell you about the relevant road signs, parking rules and everything a new driver needs to know about them in this article.

General parking rules in Sweden: explanations for drivers

● The 10-metre rule. Parking a car closer than 10 metres to an intersection in Sweden is considered a direct violation of traffic rules.

● Servicedagar signs. The appearance of such signs on road sections informs drivers about the planned arrival of public utilities for street cleaning and during this period parking is prohibited. Usually, cleaning takes place once a month.

● Road signs informing about the permitted duration of parking. It is important to pay attention to the signs, as some of them indicate paid parking only on certain days and hours, and some indicate free parking, but for a short period of time.

● The 24-hour rule. It is also worth paying attention to signs that inform you about the limited period of time a car is allowed to stay in a parking space. As a rule, the rule applies only on weekdays. However, be careful, because the relevant services can record the position of the car, and if the vehicle is found to have been parked for more than 24 hours, the driver will receive a fine.

Keep in mind that parking in Sweden should be taken seriously to avoid trouble and fines. The country even has an app called Scoutpark, which allows passers-by to take a picture of an improperly parked car. The picture is automatically transmitted to the parking service and, if the offence is confirmed, the citizen who reported it will receive a monetary reward and the offender will be fined.

Parking disc in Sweden

A parking disc is a traditional element for ensuring proper parking on roads in Sweden. It is a cardboard or plastic sheet with a built-in dial. It is used in areas marked with a ‘p-skiva’ or similar sign.

On the so-called disc, the driver sets the time of arrival at the parking space by rotating it and leaves it under the windscreen. Please note that the time is set to the nearest half hour, i.e. if the driver left the car, for example, at 12:12, the parking start time should be 12:30. It is forbidden to change the time on the disc.

Penalties for improper parking in Sweden

There are two types of fines for non-compliance with parking rules in Sweden - gross and non-gross violations. The amount that a driver will have to pay varies depending on the seriousness of the offence.

The fine notice is attached to the car and sent to the owner electronically. Payment for the offence must be made within eight days. When making the payment, you must enter the OCR/control number displayed in the in the notice of improper parking.

If the payment is overdue, the driver will be charged an increased fee, and if the fine is ignored, the case will be referred to the court.
