Kamala Harris' biography: what is known about the candidate's past?
Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. She is the daughter of immigrant scientists from India and Jamaica. At the age of 12, she moved to Canada with her mother, where she completed high school. She received her higher education at Howard University and the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a master's degree in law.
It should be noted that Harris has held many government positions, worked for a long time in the prosecutor's office, but has always been interested in politics. And in 2019, Harris already tried to become a presidential candidate, but withdrew in favor of Joe Biden, who later appointed her vice president.
Position on Ukraine: does Kamala Harris support the country?
Kamala Harris has been condemning russian aggression since the beginning of her political career. During the 2020 election campaign, she spoke out against the annexation of Crimea and russia's support for the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
“russia's illegal occupation of Crimea is a flagrant violation of international norms, as is its support for military operations in eastern Ukraine and cyberattacks,” Harris said.
After russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Harris repeatedly emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine. She criticized the delay in delivering aid to Ukraine and emphasized the need for unwavering support for Kyiv.
Important speeches and statements in support of Ukraine
It is noteworthy that in December 2021, Harris publicly warned russian president vladimir putin about the possibility of imposing “unprecedented sanctions” in the event of an invasion of Ukraine, although her position at the time did not include commenting on the country's foreign policy. After the outbreak of the war, she also advocated for economic punishment of russia and at a conference in Munich in February 2022, she announced the United States' readiness to inflict significant economic losses on russia.
In 2023, at the same conference, Harris called for russia to be held accountable for war crimes, noting that the United States would support Ukraine “as long as it takes.”
Promises of further support for Ukraine
In June 2024, Harris headed the US delegation to the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, where she pledged continued support for democratic values and opposition to dictators. She emphasized that putin's conditions for ending the war are in fact a “demand for surrender.”
Thus, Kamala Harris has repeatedly expressed her unwavering position in support of Ukraine. And it is important to note that her firm statements against russian aggression and calls for tougher sanctions against russia may strengthen her position among voters who support an active US foreign policy.

Chances of winning: can Harris beat Trump?
According to a survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, six out of ten Democrats support her candidacy for the highest office in the country.
At the same time, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, US Vice President Kamala Harris is two percentage points ahead of Republican Donald Trump after President Joe Biden ended his campaign. It is noted that Harris is ahead of Trump with a result of 44% against 42% in a national poll, with a difference within the 3% margin of error.
Thus, Kamala Harris, the first woman to serve as vice president of the United States, is now the most likely Democratic presidential candidate after Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race. Her strong support for Ukraine and her criticism of russian aggression demonstrate her unwavering stance in defense of democratic values. Despite the ambiguous attitude to her candidacy across the country, the support among Democrats gives her a significant chance to win the November elections.
