Which German states have received the largest number of Ukrainians?

Germany still ranks first in terms of the number of refugees from Ukraine. As of May 2024, more than 1.3 million Ukrainians were registered in the country. Find out which German states have received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees and where their concentration is highest

According to official data from the German federal statistical office Destatis, Western Germany has become the most popular region for Ukrainian refugees. The article below describes which states have received the largest number of Ukrainians and where their concentration is highest relative to the local population.

It should be noted that Destatis took into account the number of Ukrainians in the status of temporary protection of the European Union and migrants with Ukrainian citizenship who were in Germany before russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Which region of Germany has the largest Ukrainian diaspora?


According to official data, the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia received the most Ukrainians. As of July 2024, 232,252 Ukrainians live here. The region is known for such large cities as Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Munster.

Other German states that have received large numbers of Ukrainians


— Bavaria: about 159 thousand Ukrainians.

— Baden-Württemberg: over 155 thousand.

— Lower Saxony: 112 thousand.

— Hesse: 89 thousand.

It is also noted that the cities of Berlin and Hamburg, which are also federal states, have the highest concentration of Ukrainians relative to the local population. In Berlin, this figure is 1.7%, in Hamburg - 1.6%. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern it is 1.5%.

Which Ukrainians are seeking asylum in Germany and what status do they have?


It is noteworthy that among the people who immigrated from Ukraine to Germany in 2022 and 2023, 61% were women and 34% were minors. And as of July 2024, according to the Ausländerzentralregister AZR (Central Register of Foreigners), 64% of adults were women and about 36% were men. Of the total number of refugees, about 353 thousand were children under the age of 18. However, not all refugees arriving from Ukraine were citizens of the country, about 4% of those who arrived did not have Ukrainian citizenship.

According to the AZR database, as of July 15, 2024:


— 998,662 refugees from Ukraine have a residence permit under Paragraph 24;

— 64,879 people have a fictitious certificate (i.e., no decision has been made on the application yet);

— 43,231 asylum seekers have applied under Paragraph 24 of the Residence Act;

— 43,089 persons have applied for protection;

— 33,869 citizens are in the country but have not yet applied for protection.
