The summer heat can be exhausting, especially if you are looking for coolness and comfort while on holiday. Luckily, there are cities in Europe that are renowned for having pleasantly cool weather even during the summer months.

With the abnormal heat wave that continues to hit Europe, it's not easy to find a place without the scorching sun, but there are such cities! And here are our top 10 cities that are perfect for a comfortable holiday in the summer of 2024.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and is known for its historic attractions including Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 20 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal place for walking and sightseeing.

Ostend, Belgium

Although best known for its chocolate, beer and Brussels, the centre of EU democracy, it would be foolish to turn your nose up at Belgium's beach resorts. Let Ostend, the largest resort in Flanders, lure you to its golden beaches this summer. Enjoy morning kitesurfing and days filled with fresh oysters on the Albert I promenade without worrying about the heat.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is a city where summer temperatures stay between 15-20 degrees Celsius. It is the perfect place for cycling, visiting museums and relaxing on the picturesque waterfronts. Be sure to visit the famous Tivoli and Nyhavn amusement park.

La Gomera, Canary Islands

While mainland Spain is experiencing heatwaves and forest fires, the Canary Islands town of La Gomera lurks on the Atlantic coast. Summer temperatures here stay within 20 degrees Celsius, which beckons tourists to spend their holidays here.

In the town you can enjoy hiking, swimming in the black sand and feasting on melon, lobster and marmalade rabbit.

Oslo, Norway

Oslo, the capital of Norway, offers cool summers with temperatures around 18-22 degrees Celsius. Here you can enjoy strolling through green parks, visit the Vigeland Sculpture Park and explore the fjords surrounding the city.

Sylt, Germany

This place is a real magnet for the German elite, the mild microclimate of the North Frisian islands, striped strandcorbs and pristine light sands understandably attract travellers to the west coast of Sylt.

A Michelin plaque-winning gastronomic scene, thatched cottages and lighthouses scattered around the peninsulas make this pleasant little-known beach holiday one to add to your list.

Riga, Latvia

Riga, the capital of Latvia, is known for its rich history and Art Nouveau architecture. In summer, the temperature here stays at 18-22 degrees Celsius. Walk around the Old Town, enjoy the local cuisine and relax on the picturesque embankments of the River Daugava.

Mashiku, Madeira

The Portuguese archipelago is a true gift of nature. Luxurious beaches, moderate temperatures and ocean.

But, nestled between mountains, far eastern Mashiku deserves special attention - a man-made beach covered in waves, with golden grains imported from Africa, manicured gardens and the sight of terracotta roofs dotting its landscape.

Pori, Finland

On Finland's west coast, the town of Pori is a centre for jazz music, Finnish street food (including porilainen, a towering sausage sandwich) and, the star of Scandinavia, Jüüteri Beach: 6km of white sand suitable for windsurfing, birdwatching, beach volleyball and barbecues. Thanks to the Kokemäenjoki River and the Bothnian Sea National Park, this diverse destination has mastered a summer culture of below 30C.

Innsbruck, Austria

Innsbruck, a city in the Alps, offers cool summers with temperatures around 20-24C. The city is surrounded by picturesque mountains and offers plenty of outdoor activities. Visit the Golden Roof, Ambras Castle and climb to the top of the mountains for spectacular views.

When travelling abroad, you should definitely take care of your safety.
