Most people associate the word ‘observatory’ with the starry sky. However, these institutions study not only astronomical phenomena. They also study the weather, predict earthquakes, and analyse magnetic storms, which have become so common in recent years. Observatories have been known for centuries, as the study of the stars began in the Middle Ages. For a long time, these were purely scientific institutions, but now tourists have the opportunity to join excursions to the museum parts of observatories. Read this article to find out where you can travel in Ukraine to learn about the sky, stars, celestial phenomena, and weather.

Astronomical Observatory of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

This observatory is dedicated to astronomy - it studies space and celestial phenomena. It is located in Kyiv and is a functional unit of one of the most famous Ukrainian universities, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Starting from September 2023, the observatory will be open for tours, but in compliance with all safety rules.

Tours are available by appointment. To do this, send an email to [email protected] or call the following numbers:

- (044)486-39-10

- (098) 366-08-23

Please note: Excursions that include telescope observations are possible only in clear and low cloudy weather, so please call the observatory on the day of the planned excursion to check whether there will be an observation.

Excursions to the Astronomical Museum are held regardless of weather conditions. At the museum, you can learn about the history of scientific research in the relevant field, see examples of various astronomical instruments from past centuries, ask questions to the guide, and learn more about astronomy as a science.

The cost of the tour:

100 UAH. - for adults;

50 UAH. - for privileged categories;

free for combatants and their families.

Details, payment methods and the schedule of excursions can be found on the website of the Astronomical Observatory.
