Can I buy antibiotics without a prescription in Poland?

The Polish healthcare system establishes strict rules for the circulation of antibacterial drugs. You cannot buy antibiotics in Polish pharmacies without a prescription, and there are good reasons for this.

Before prescribing an antibiotic, medical specialists conduct a comprehensive examination of the patient. It includes special laboratory tests that determine the sensitivity of pathogens to different groups of antibiotics. Only after receiving the results of these tests can the doctor choose the most effective drug, calculate the optimal treatment regimen and write a prescription.

In addition, it is important to know about the validity of prescriptions. While for most prescription drugs this period is one year, a prescription for antibiotics is valid for only one week.
