Planning a trip abroad requires careful preparation, especially when it comes to the elderly. One of the most important aspects of such preparation is to take out health insurance, which will provide the necessary protection during your stay outside of Ukraine.

Why is health insurance especially important for the elderly?

1. Increased health risks:

● Higher likelihood of chronic diseases exacerbation

● Slower adaptation to climate change and time zones

● Higher sensitivity to stressful situations

2. High cost of medical services abroad:

● A doctor's consultation can cost from 50 to 200 euros

● One day of hospital stay - from 300 euros

● Urgent medical care - from 500 euros

3. Need for specialized care:

● Possible need for regular health monitoring

● Specific medical procedures

● Special requirements for transportation, if necessary

Important restrictions when insuring the elderly

When planning a trip, it is important to take into account certain restrictions that exist in the field of health insurance:

Age restrictions: Most insurance companies offer health insurance policies for people between the ages of 18 and 65;

Medical conditions: There are restrictions on coverage of chronic diseases and certain diseases/conditions (congenital diseases, neoplasms, endocrine diseases, diabetes, etc;)

Provision of medical care: As a rule, insurances do not cover routine visits to the doctor and work only in emergency and urgent cases. In addition, if the trip was made despite medical contraindications, or if the person acted intentionally to cause the insured event, the policy does not cover the cost of treatment.

What does the health insurance policy cover?

The terms and conditions may vary depending on the package you choose. For example, insurance for traveling to European countries, which is also suitable for people who plan to receive temporary protection, has two packages: Europe Classic (EUR 30,000) and Europe Classic Plus (EUR 50,000) and covers within the limits indicated:

● Emergency outpatient and inpatient care;

● dental care (in case of emergency);

● medical transportation;

● diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19;

● emergency obstetric care (up to the 28th week of pregnancy);

● accidents and repatriation of the body to the place of burial in Ukraine (in case of death due to an accident);

● burial expenses abroad in case of death;

● transportation costs by vehicle to the nearest medical facility (in the Plus package).

Such insurance can be issued for a period of 30 to 90 days. This is a good option for those who plan short trips, relocation or change of country of residence in order to obtain temporary protection.

Instead, worldwide travel health insurance policies have a wider coverage, but are not suitable for those who have temporary protection. For example, All World Silver policies, in addition to standard services, cover:

● costs of emergency medical services in the host country;

● medical services and treatment of acute respiratory infections;

● consultations, diagnostics, treatment and medications prescribed by a doctor.

And Platinum and Gold packages have extended travel coverage, which includes:

● reimbursement of the cost of staying in the high-comfort waiting area in case of flight cancellation or delay for more than 4 hours;

● reimbursement of the cost of lost luggage (if agreed by the carrier);

● reimbursement of expenses for the elimination of sudden technical breakdowns or damage caused by an accident to the car/its parking lot;

● expenses for vaccinations and inoculations;

● legal and translation services to obtain medical services or return to the country of residence, etc.

In addition, these policies have more flexible terms and conditions, in particular, they can be issued for a period of 3 to 180 days (an annual package can be purchased only for 365 days).

Please note! The annual medical package is suitable for work and residence permits and is available to people aged 18 to 60.
