US eases travel advisory to Ukraine: list of relatively safe areas
Recently, it became known that the US Department of Foreign Affairs has changed its travel advisory for its citizens to Ukraine. Find out more about which regions of Ukraine have been identified by the State Department as relatively safe and how to protect yourself from military risks while in Ukraine
The war has changed the lives of Ukrainians and forced the whole world to reconsider its views on the safety of travelling through Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, most countries have recommended that their citizens refrain from travelling to our country due to the high risks. However, the situation is gradually changing, and the US State Department has recently updated its travel advisory for Ukraine.
We will tell you which regions are now considered safer in this article.
Recommendations for US citizens to visit Ukraine
According to the US Department of State, a number of Ukrainian regions are showing an improvement in the security situation. This has been made possible by the effective operation of air defence systems and geographical distance from the frontline.
The most significant changes affected nine regions in the west and north of the country.
For the following regions, the danger level was reduced from the maximum fourth to the third:
- Volyn;
- Lviv region;
- Zakarpattia; Lviv; Zakarpattia
- Ivano-Frankivsk;
- Chernivtsi;
- Ternopil;
- Rivne;
- Khmelnytsky;
- Zhytomyr.
This means that instead of a categorical travel ban, as before, these regions now have a recommendation to carefully consider the need for a visit.
However, US diplomats emphasise the importance of continuous monitoring of the situation.
American citizens are advised to closely follow official US government reports, as well as local and international media, on changes in the security situation and air alerts. Experts emphasise that despite some improvement, the overall security situation in Ukraine is still difficult to predict.
As you know, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has also eased its travel advisory for its citizens to enter Ukraine.

For the attention of visitors! During their stay in Ukraine, foreign guests must strictly adhere to the following security requirements:
-be sure to respond to air raid alarms and immediately go to the shelter when a danger is announced. We recommend downloading the special Air Alert app (available in the App Store and Google Play), selecting the appropriate region and activating the alert to be instantly informed of possible threats;
- respect curfew rules and carry identification documents with you at all times. Find out what the curfews are in different regions of Ukraine in 2024 here;

This is the most reliable way to protect yourself from unforeseen circumstances.
