Benefits for Ukrainians in Germany: reasons why benefits may be reduced

Social benefits in Germany are a significant help for Ukrainians seeking temporary protection. However, receiving them requires compliance with the established rules. Find out what violations can lead to a reduction in benefits
Ukrainians who have been granted temporary protection in Germany are entitled to social assistance. This financial support helps to cover basic needs and adapt to new living conditions. However, the amount of the benefit can be reduced in certain situations if you violate the established rules.
Benefits for Ukrainians in Germany
The amount of social assistance in Germany varies depending on age and marital status. It is not an unemployment benefit, but payments that cover basic expenses. Currently, the amounts are as follows:
▪️ 563 euros - for single people, single parents or adults with minor partners;
▪️ 506 euros - for adult partners in a couple;
▪️ 451 euros - for young people aged 15 to 24 living alone;
▪️ 471 euros - for children aged 14 to 17;
▪️ €390 for children aged 6 to 13;
▪️ €357 for children under 6 years of age.
These payments are intended to cover the costs of accommodation, food and basic needs. However, they are subject to a number of obligations.
Reasons for the reduction of the allowance
German law sets strict rules for recipients of social assistance. Violation of these rules can lead to a reduction in benefits.
1. Refusal to participate in integration courses or employment
If a person refuses to:
- attend integration courses
- accept a job offer;
- participate in seminars or employment programmes,
Payments may be reduced:
🔻 by 10% for the first violation;
🔻 by 20% for the second;
🔻 by 30% for the third.
The reduction in payments is valid for 1 to 3 months, depending on the number of violations.
2. Repeated refusal to work
If a person refuses to accept a job or study offer twice within a year, the benefit may be reduced for up to two months. However, if a year has passed between the violations, the previous reductions will not be taken into account.
3. Definition of ‘suitable work’
A job is considered suitable if it meets the physical and mental capabilities of the person. Exceptions include:
- a threat to physical or mental health;
- inability to arrange care for children or sick relatives.
In such cases, local authorities are obliged to ensure that children of disabled parents have priority attendance at kindergartens and schools.

How to avoid a reduction in benefits?
To receive full benefits, you must follow several rules:
1. Attend integration courses - this is not only a mandatory condition, but also an opportunity to adapt and learn the language faster.
2. Do not refuse job offers - if you have any difficulties, discuss them with representatives of the employment centre.
3. Report any changes - you should immediately inform the employment centre of any change of residence, job or marital status.
