Travel medical insurance is a document that can significantly simplify life in many unforeseen situations abroad. The policy is mandatory for obtaining a visa or residence permit in most EU countries. Also, the appropriate type of insurance will be needed during visa-free travel for travelers with children, those planning an extreme vacation, when visiting countries with a high risk of insured events, etc.

Having a medical insurance policy abroad is a guarantee for a tourist that he will receive the necessary assistance.

How to get insurance to Europe? How to choose insurance for a trip to the EU? We will tell you further.

General requirements for health insurance for entry into the EU

According to European legislation, the following requirements are imposed on the insurance policy:

- Insurance conditions must comply with the requirements of “EU Council Decision 2004/17 on health insurance for travellers abroad” (mandatory since June 2012);

- The policy must be valid for the entire territory of the Schengen Agreement countries;

- Insurance period – the entire period of travel + 15 days;

- Sum insured – at least 30,000 EUR;

- Deductible – up to 150 EUR;

- Insurance must cover compensation for the following risks: emergency care, injuries, transportation to hospital, inpatient treatment, return to the homeland, including in the event of death, etc.

In addition to the general requirements, your insurance policy for a trip to Europe can be expanded with additional benefits. Often, even non-medical risks are added to it - compensation for lost luggage, flight delay or trip cancellation, etc.

Features of insurance for different types of visas in the EU

Depending on the purpose of the trip and planned activities in Europe, a foreigner needs to take out an appropriate insurance policy.

Requirements for an insurance policy for a Schengen visa

Travel insurance is included in the list of mandatory documents when obtaining a visa to EU countries. Insurance for a Schengen visa must be taken out for the entire period of stay in the country. In addition, it must meet the following requirements:

- The amount of coverage significantly exceeds 30,000 euros, with a guarantee that any costs for recovery and repatriation and costs for treatment of COVID-19 will be covered.

- Insurance covers a wide range of risks (visits to doctors, hospital treatment, medications, etc.).

- Territory of distribution - all Schengen countries.

National visa

Obtaining work, study, business and other categories of long-term visas, as well as a residence permit, requires proof of health insurance.

Typically, health insurance has much broader coverage than travel insurance. In particular, it covers a larger number of illnesses, often covers dental care and has a longer validity period. However, the detailed requirements for health insurance for Ukrainians in Europe may differ depending on the country of destination.

To find out the specifics of visa processing and health insurance policy requirements for Ukrainians in each EU country, consult a migration lawyer.

Insurance for visa-free travel to the EU

The issue of having an insurance policy is not clearly specified in the legislative acts of the European Union. The EU Visa Code requires a health insurance policy, but the border code does not include it in the list of mandatory documents. Also, among the list of reasons why border guards may refuse entry, the absence of a tourist's insurance policy is not provided for.

However, on the other hand, a travel insurance policy is one of the documents that, together with a return ticket and accommodation reservation form, can confirm the purpose of the trip to the EU countries.

Also, having an insurance policy is important for safe travels and saving money.

How much can you save with health insurance?

The healthcare system in European countries is built on insurance - the insurance company pays for the treatment of patients. Each person independently chooses a package of services and the amount of coverage. In the event that there is no policy - you will have to pay for the medical care provided from your own funds. Considering that medical services abroad are very expensive, even minor health problems in the absence of insurance can be expensive. For example, in Norway, an appointment with a family doctor for uninsured persons will cost 30 euros, an appointment with a specialist in the Czech Republic - from 40 euros. A day in a hospital in Germany costs 125 euros, and an ambulance call in Switzerland will cost 800 euros. In contrast, the average cost of insurance per day is only 0.53 euros.

Even a simple cold can hit a Ukrainian's wallet hard in Europe, because medicine can only be bought at a pharmacy with a prescription, and in order to get it, you need to visit a doctor.
