The Ukrainian Carpathians offer dozens of hiking trails of varying difficulty—from easy walks along the ridges to full-fledged ascents of two-thousand-meter peaks. Here you can see high-mountain lakes, rocky peaks, ancient mountain pastures, and the remains of the legendary observatory on Pip Ivan. Each route reveals the mountains from a different perspective: some focus on active adventures with rafting and horseback riding, while others emphasize self-guided hikes with overnight stays in tents or mountain huts.

Climbing Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi: Routes with Rafting and Horseback Riding

Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi (2,028 m) is one of the most popular peaks in the Carpathians, known for the ruins of the Polish “White Elephant” observatory at its very summit. You can reach it as part of various tours, and each one plans the route in its own way.

The “Pip Ivan, Rafting, Horses” tour lasts three days and combines the climb with water and horseback riding activities. The first day is dedicated to rafting down the rapids of the Black Cheremosh—participants navigate the Dzembron, Didiv Likot, Bila Kobyla, Huchky, and Huk sections on rafts or inflatable kayaks, accompanied by an experienced safety kayaker. On the second day, the group hikes across the Pid Smotrych mountain pasture and up Mount Vukhatyi Kamin to the summit of Pip Ivan, where they have a picnic and a photo session with a swing at an altitude of over two kilometers. The final day features a horseback ride along the Stepansky–Kosarysche ridge with panoramic views of the entire Chornogora range. The base camp is the “White Elephant Dzembronya” campsite near Vorokhta.

The “Journey to Pip Ivan” tour is also three days long but structured differently. The first day features a hike to the Hungarian Rocks (1,250 m) through the village of Zeleny, with the option to visit a Hutsul family for lunch. The day’s route is about 15 km. The second day involves the actual ascent to Pip Ivan via Vukhaty Kamin, followed by the same picnic at the summit. The third day offers a choice: a hike along the Kosarysche Ridge (10 km) with panoramic views or a rest day at the campsite. Both tours start and end in Vorokhta.

Routes to Shpytsi, Brebeneskul, and Lake Nesamovite

The rocky peak of Shpytsi (1,863 m), Ukraine’s highest-altitude lake Brebeneskul, and the mysterious Lake Nesamovite—these are the destinations that draw both experienced hikers and beginners to the Carpathians.

The “Shpytsia and Brebeneskul” tour is a compact two-day program for those who want to immerse themselves in the high mountains. The first day’s route leads through the legendary Gadzhyna tract, associated with the outlaw Oleksa Dovbush, to the rocky peak of Shpytsia, then on to Mount Rebra (2,001 m) and to Lake Brebeneskul, where the group sets up camp. The second day begins with an ascent of Mount Brebeneskul (2,038 m), offering a panoramic view of the entire Chornogora range and the Verkhovyna region, after which participants descend through the Kizi Ulogi tract to the village of Bystrets. The tour offers two options: an overnight stay in cabins or a classic camping option with tents.

The “Shpytsi–Nesamovite” tour is a three-day trip and includes a more extensive program. The first day involves traveling to the Carpathians with a stop at the Silver Waterfalls in Sheshory and a tour of the Verkhovyna Brewery. The second day is the hike itself to Shpytsi and Lake Nesamovite, one of the most mysterious Carpathian lakes, shrouded in legends. The third day offers a choice between rafting on the Black Cheremosh, a horseback ride, and a walk to the Probiy Waterfall in Yaremche. The route is designed for participants without special training and combines hiking with cultural and gastronomic elements.

Mount Kostel and a three-day ridge route through the Chornogora

Certain routes in the Carpathians are suitable for those seeking either an easy hike with stunning panoramas or a full-fledged multi-day trek along the ridges.

The “Hike to Mount Kostel” tour takes two days and is suitable even for beginners. On the first day, participants visit the Park of Earth History with an interactive archaeological exploration, and then travel to the Carpathians. Optionally, you can go on a jeep tour to the Zhenetsky Huk Waterfall (13 m high) via a mountain road along the river. The second day features a mini-hike up the rocky Mount Kostel (also known as Gorgan): the round-trip route is about 5 km and of moderate difficulty. Along the way, hikers stop at the Great Hutsul Swing, and from the summit, they enjoy panoramic views comparable to those from 2,000-meter peaks—only without the grueling climb. After the descent, the group has lunch at a Hutsul kolyba and concludes the tour with a visit to a brewery.

The “HUT ROUTE: Three Two-Thousanders” tour is a three-day program for those ready for more challenging hikes.

The first day’s route (9 km) leads through the Prut Valley across the Maryshevska Ridge to the “White Elephant of Gadzhyna” mountain hut at an altitude of 1,100 m, where the group spends the night and warms up in a hot tub. The second day is the most intense: about 15 km through the Gadzhyna tract, the Shpytsi cliffs (1,863 m), Mount Rebra (2,001 m), and, if conditions permit, also to Brebeneskul (2,035 m) and Gutyn Tomnatyk (2,016 m). The third day is the final trek (13 km) along the Kosarysche Ridge with panoramic views of the Chornogora Mountains to the “White Elephant Dzembronya” camp. Over three days, the group conquers three two-thousand-meter peaks and covers over 35 kilometers across the Carpathian ridges.
