About this tour

Jewish Ivano-Frankivsk

Tour dates: daily

The founders of the city granted Jews the right to live in the city for life, and allowed them to establish a school, bathhouse, and synagogue. Jews traded in clothing and furs, were jewelers and tavern keepers. Jewish butchers supplied their goods to the Potocki Palace. There were many shoemakers, blacksmiths, cobblers, musicians, butchers, and resin makers. They owned numerous distilleries and mills. From the middle of the eighteenth to the middle of the twentieth century, the share of the Jewish population of Stanislaviv ranged from 41 to 50 percent of the city's total population. One of the most famous US financiers, the owners of the city's first passageway, lost tablets, synagogues that were 100% reconstructed, famous entrepreneurs and ghetto sites, Jewish cemeteries, and matzevot found in the most unexpected places. All this in a thematic tour: "Jewish Stanislaviv".
