Shevchenkivskyi Grove
About this tour
Excursion
to the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life
By choosing
this excursion, you will get to know Ukrainian wooden architecture and take a
walk through a picturesque park. Here, just a few tram stops from the center of
Lviv, you can feel like you are in a real Carpathian village. Before the
entrance to the museum, we are greeted by a monument to Taras Shevchenko and
the heroes of his works, which are also depicted in the sculpture. Lviv's residents habitually call this place Kaiserwald, because at the end of the 18th
century, the territory of the current museum was chosen by Emperor Joseph II. Shevchenkivskyi
Grove is an open-air museum, a museum of folk architecture and everyday life.
Wooden buildings, in which peasants in various areas of Western Ukraine used to
live or work, were moved here. Here you will be able to see for yourself that
the architecture of the Ukrainian village is not only thatched houses. The
museum exposition is divided into several sectors. Entering the Grove, we
immediately enter a peculiar Boykiv village: old huts are covered with straw
and wooden tiles; churches were built in Boyki traditions; a schoolhouse
standing near the Singing Field. Nearby is a small menagerie (zoo) and a pond.
Several Lemki buildings were transported from Transcarpathia to the museum's
territory. Here you can get to know the unique culture of the Carpathian
Lemkos, see their church, residential and commercial premises.
Of course, Hutsul architecture is also represented here. Well, where would we go without the Hutsuls, who are an integral part of the Ukrainian nation. These Carpathian mountaineers have long-lived on the highest slopes of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Are you familiar with such words as brynza or trembita? It is to the Hutsuls that we owe such a great contribution to Ukrainian culture. The museum also presents the rural art of Volhynia, Bukovyna, Podillia and Polissia. Of course, there are similar museums in other parts of Ukraine, for example, the Open-Air Museum in Pirogov, and Lviv's Shevchenkivskyi Grove occupies a worthy place among them.
