TO UKRAINE BY CAR

Traveling to Ukraine by car in 2026 is a practical and flexible option for those who want to cross the border on their own and have more control over the route. This method of travel is often chosen by those traveling from Europe - foreign tourists, volunteers, and Ukrainians returning home.

Despite the war, Ukraine continues to receive visitors. It is possible to get here by car, but it is important to prepare in advance: collect the necessary documents, take out insurance, check the technical condition of the car and know the current entry rules. Under martial law, this will help avoid problems at the border and on the road.

Things to consider before you travel

Documents for entering Ukraine by car:

  • international passport (valid for at least 6 months),
  • driver's license (national or international),
  • vehicle registration certificate,
  • power of attorney (if you are not the owner of the car),
  • international insurance policy “Green Card” is required.

The car must be technically sound. Check the oil level, brake system, headlights, and tires before the trip. Be sure to have a first aid kit, an emergency stop sign, a fire extinguisher and a spare tire in the car.

Insurance:

In addition to the Green Card, we recommend taking out Mini Hull insurance with war risk coverage - such a policy will help in case of an accident, damage to the car during an air raid, natural disaster or technical failure.

It is also worth having health insurance with war risk coverage to protect yourself.

Border crossing points:

The most popular checkpoints to enter the EU are Shehyni, Krakovets, Porubne, and Uzhhorod. Due to high traffic, queues often form here. To save time, we recommend registering in the eCherha system in advance.

Customs regulations:

You can import up to €10,000 in cash without declaring it. For personal belongings, the following limits apply: up to 50 euros for food, up to 1 liter of alcohol, up to 200 cigarettes. It is better to declare art, antiques, and large appliances.

On the territory of Ukraine:

1. Carefully follow the traffic rules: the speed limit is 50 km/h in settlements, 90 km/h outside them.

2. Curfews are in effect in the regions - it is forbidden to move around at night without permission.

3. Checkpoints can be both in the frontline and rear areas - always have your documents with you, 4. Follow the instructions of the patrols.
