DETAILS

Currently, at least 200,000 Ukrainian refugees are temporarily living in the Czech Republic. Immigrants who arrived in the country in their own car are concerned about the question: how long do they have the right to drive a car with Ukrainian license plates in the Czech Republic and what documents do they need to issue for this.

What documents does a driver of a car with Ukrainian license plates need in the Czech Republic?

Ukrainians temporarily staying in the Czech Republic can legally drive their cars on the territory of the country. In addition, immigrants do not need to replace their driver's license with a European document, because even if the license expires after January 1, 2022, it will be considered valid.

Do Ukrainians need to insure their car in the Czech Republic?

Ukrainians in the Czech Republic do not need to insure their car during the first 6 months. In the event of a traffic accident, all damages will be compensated by ChKP - the Czech insurance service.

It is worth noting that currently refugees from Ukraine with a temporary protection visa in the Czech Republic cannot purchase Czech compulsory insurance, and the car must be insured 6 months after arrival in the country, otherwise you will face a fine of 5,000 to 40,000 kroner.

How to insure a car in the Czech Republic?

There is a simple alternative: take out a Green Card insurance policy at any Ukrainian insurance company. You can do it online using the link. Please note that people who have issued a "Green Card" will not be obliged to submit their car to a regular technical inspection in the Czech Republic.

Can a person with a temporary protection visa buy a car in the Czech Republic?

Yes, you can, but instead of a Czech license plate, you will receive a transit number that will be valid for 3 months. You will be able to extend the validity of the transit license plate for another three months only once. After the last period has expired, you need to take the car to Ukraine and register it. After registration, you can return to the Czech Republic again in a car with Ukrainian license plates.

Can a Ukrainian get Czech license plates for a car?

You can get a Czech license plate for a car only in the case of "family reunification", for example, if your husband or wife lives in the Czech Republic for a long time or on a permanent basis, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country grants you the corresponding status.

Do Ukrainians need to pay customs duty for cars?

If the car is imported from an EU country, you do not need to pay customs duty. But if the car is imported from a country that is not a member of the European Union, a tax must be paid. It is also noted that such cars should not be older than 8 years, because in this case you will not be able to get a Czech license plate.

Can a Ukrainian get a driver's license in the Czech Republic?

If you have a European certificate, there is no need to replace it. In cases where the driver's license does not meet the European standard, or you do not have this document at all - you need to see a doctor, complete your studies at a Czech driving school and pass exams. But keep in mind that a doctor's examination will cost you 500-700 kroner, and the prices for training in Czech driving schools range from 15,000 to 35,000 kroner.

It is also noted that a Ukrainian who previously did not have a driver's license can obtain one only if he has been in the Czech Republic for at least 185 calendar days during the year, having the appropriate reasons for this, such as study or work.

We will remind you! Previously, we wrote about the simplification of the procedure for buying a car for Ukrainians in Poland. You can familiarize yourself with the updated rules by following the link.
