In connection with the state of war in Ukraine, most states have simplified entry rules for Ukrainians. Currently, you can leave Ukraine on the basis of any identity document. However, if a Ukrainian is in a country that is not a member of the Schengen zone, he is subject to the general rules of entry into the Schengen countries.

Rules of visa-free entry to the Schengen area

Visa-free entry to Schengen countries from third countries is possible if two conditions are met:

• availability of a biometric foreign passport;

• if during the last 180 days you did not exceed the period of stay of 90 days in the Schengen area.

When is a visa required?

If a Ukrainian is outside the Schengen area (for example, in Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway, Bulgaria, Romania, etc.) and does not have a biometric passport, he will need to obtain a visa to enter the Schengen countries, even if you have an old foreign passport sample (non-biometric). To do this, you need to contact the Embassy or Consulate of the country to which you are going in the country of residence.

What to do if a Ukrainian does not have a foreign passport?

Ukrainians who are outside Schengen without a valid foreign passport (you entered the country of residence on the basis of internal documents or lost your passport), but plan to return to Ukraine through a member state of the Schengen zone, for example, Poland, then you must apply to the Consular Department of the Embassy of Ukraine in the host country and obtain an identity card for returning to Ukraine, after which obtain a Polish transit visa at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland.

We will remind you! Previously, we wrote about the visa-free regime for Ukrainians with biometric passports. Read more about the basic conditions for traveling abroad here.
