Since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, all crossing points between the two countries have been officially closed. The situation is the same on the territory of Belarus. At the same time, Ukrainian citizens continue to cross the border to return home.

Who is allowed to cross the border with russia into Ukraine during the war?

State Border Guard Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko said that despite the war, people from russia continue to cross the border and enter Ukraine.

"Citizens of Ukraine cannot be restricted in their right to return home under any circumstances. But I emphasize that only citizens of Ukraine can cross the border from russia or Belarus now", - Demchenko explained in a commentary for the BBC.

He reminded that the checkpoints are indeed officially closed, but an exception is made for Ukrainian citizens to return home and people are allowed to cross.

Demchenko also denied the information currently being spread on social media that russian citizens are entering Ukraine through the border from the aggressor state.

Who can cross the border with russia and Belarus?

According to Demchenko, it can mainly be children who were previously taken to russia, and those Ukrainians who were forced to voluntarily or forcibly leave for the territory of russia and Belarus during the fighting.

The State Border Guard Service spokesman also emphasized that this depends on a number of factors. In particular, the physical ability to cross, security issues and shelling. Currently, in many regions, the border areas of Ukraine are constantly shelled by the aggressor.

"We will accept everyone and everywhere, but there is still the question of where they will let you go from the other side. That is why we record such entries from russia in Sumy region", - said Demchenko.

How many Ukrainians have returned home from russia and Belarus since the beginning of the full-scale war?

According to the Border Guard Service, almost ten thousand Ukrainian citizens have returned home since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine from russia and Belarus, despite the officially closed checkpoints.

Please note! Currently, there is only one checkpoint, Mokrany-Domianove, on the border with Belarus. However, it operates in a limited mode: only Ukrainian citizens returning from Belarus to Ukraine are allowed to cross the border on foot. The list of documents required for crossing the border at the checkpoint and its peculiarities are in our article.
