How to Extend Temporary Protection in Slovenia: Instructions for Ukrainians

The Slovenian authorities have extended the validity of temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine who were forced to move to the country. Find out more about whether you need to extend your legal residence permit in Slovenia and other details

The Slovenian authorities have been hosting Ukrainian refugees and providing them with the necessary assistance since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. On 20 April, the government decided to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians who arrived in the country after 24 February 2022.  


How many Ukrainians currently have residence permits in Slovenia?  

 

As of 11 April, more than 9,000 Ukrainians have been granted temporary protection in Slovenia.  


It is also noted that from 24 February to March 2023, the Government of Slovenia issued or extended 120 permanent residence permits and 628 temporary residence permits.  


It is estimated that as of 4 March 2023, 2,772 Ukrainians had valid residence permits in Slovenia. Of these:  


  • 1 866 permanent residence permits; 
  • 856 temporary residence permits.  


It should be recalled that permanent or temporary residence permits in Slovenia can be obtained by Ukrainians who came to the country for education, employment, family reunification and other reasons. A temporary protection permit is granted to those Ukrainians who arrived in Slovenia to escape from the war.  


How to apply for temporary protection status in Slovenia?  

 

To obtain temporary protection status in Slovenia, you need to fill out an application by following the link.  


The completed application must be submitted to the police. Later, it will be sent to the administration of the county that deals with the resettlement of Ukrainians.  


Keep in mind that only those Ukrainians who were on the territory of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 can obtain temporary protection status. They must be citizens of Ukraine or stateless persons and citizens of other countries.
