The European Union Asylum Agency (EUAA) has published a report on the results of the first year of the Directive on temporary protection for Ukrainians. According to the analysis, the procedure for granting asylum to Ukrainian citizens works effectively, because more than four million displaced persons from Ukraine received immediate protection.

As a general rule, the duration of temporary protection is 1 year, but the war in Ukraine continues, so the European Commission decided to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians until March 2024. The extension procedure differs depending on the country of residence of the Ukrainian. In the first part, we talked about the procedure by which the documents of 14 European countries will be extended. Today we will talk about the procedure in 8 more states.

Norway

Norway has automatically extended for one year the validity of residence permits issued to Ukrainians who have obtained temporary protection in the country. Therefore, there is no need to contact the authorities to renew your permit.

Finland

Finland also automatically extended the residence permit of Ukrainians with temporary status for one year without the need to reissue the plastic ID card. Ukrainians will receive a letter confirming the extension of the validity of the permit, if they left their phone number during registration - the information will also be sent via SMS. The old plastic residence permit (oleskelupakortti) can be replaced with a new one at the request of the refugee.

Hungary

The Hungarian government also extended the validity of residence permits for Ukrainian refugees. Status is also provided automatically. Ukrainian refugees do not need to take any action.

You can read more about this information in our material.

Latvia

Citizens of Ukraine who received the status of temporary protection in Latvia in 2022 will have their temporary residence permits extended until March 4, 2024, regardless of the stated validity period of the document. Old documents remain valid on the territory of Latvia, but Ukrainians can apply for a new temporary residence permit if it is necessary to leave Latvia or the issued document is lost or damaged, etc.

Switzerland

In November 2022, the temporary protection status "S" for all Ukrainians was extended until March 4, 2024.

Iceland

The Icelandic authorities have published further guidance for those extending their residence permit until 2 March 2024 on the basis of temporary protection. Ukrainians must come to an appointment and take a photo to obtain a new residence permit. The procedure must be completed within 30 days before the expiration of the current permit, otherwise the status cannot be renewed.

Malta

To apply for the extension of the certificate of temporary protection for Ukrainians in Malta until March 4, 2024, you need to make an appointment by sending an email to [email protected].

On the day of admission, the Ukrainian will need to present a certificate of temporary protection, which must be replaced.
