On Sunday, June 4, Ukraine honors the memory of children who died as a result of russia's armed aggression. At the same time, the world marks the International Day of Innocent Children as Victims of Aggression. Read below to find out how many innocent lives the war in Ukraine has claimed.


International Day of Innocent Children as Victims of Aggression


The International Day of Innocent Children is celebrated annually on June 4. This day provides an opportunity to draw the world's attention to the problem of aggression and violence faced by children around the world. Innocent children are victims of various forms of aggression, whether physical, psychological or sexual violence.


Child victims in Ukraine


On June 4, Ukraine commemorates children who died as a result of russia's armed aggression against Ukraine. The Memorial Day was established by a resolution of the Verkhovna Rada in 2021. 


Children who have died in Donbas since 2014


The memorial date was established in honor of children who have been victims of russia's hybrid aggression in Donbas since 2014. However, the exact number of child victims in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions has not yet been established.


According to various sources, from 2014 to February 2022, more than 240 children were killed in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Between 150 and 500 minors sustained various injuries and traumas. More than 50 children are reported missing.

After russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the number of children who became victims of aggression has increased significantly.


According to the only confirmed data from the Office of the Prosecutor General, as of June 4, more than 1,490 children have been affected by russian aggression. At the same time, the war has claimed the lives of 485 children.

Where did children suffer the most?


- Donetsk region - 464 children;

- Kharkiv region - 283;

- Kyiv region - 128;

- Kherson region - 105;

- Zaporizhzhia region - 91;

- Mykolaiv region - 89;

- Dnipropetrovsk region - 80;

- Chernihiv region - 71;

- Luhansk region - 67.


It is also worth noting that since the beginning of the full-scale war, russia has illegally deported about 16,000 children from Ukraine.
