Ukraine has produced many brilliant scientists and artists, so we should use every opportunity to pay tribute to outstanding Ukrainians. Today, June 23, the world celebrates International Women in Engineering Day. This is an occasion to draw attention to women and their achievements, to talk about equal opportunities and access for women to develop and pursue careers in engineering.

We are telling you about prominent Ukrainian women who have developed engineering in Ukraine and the world.

International Women in Engineering Day. History of the event

The UK first began celebrating women's contribution to engineering on June 23, 2014. It was only in 2016 that this day was recognized by UNESCO, and a year later the holiday became international.

Some statistics

Although the modern world provides equal opportunities for men and women, gender inequality in engineering persists. Men still outnumber women. However, the Society of Women Engineers cites positive statistics and emphasizes that the number of women in STEM professions (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is growing. Over the past ten years, the percentage of women has increased by 10% to 27%.

Stories of women who have made a career in engineering

Today we would like to tell you about our contemporaries - Ukrainian women who have broken into the "male" profession and achieved significant achievements.

Yulia Bezvershenko is the vice president of Unia Scientifica, a PhD in physics and mathematics. The scientist was included in the list of TOP-20 Ukrainian women in STEM for 2018-2019, compiled by the Center for Corporate Social Responsibility Development.

During her studies, Yulia studied classical and quantum integrated systems and the interaction of quantum systems with external fields. In 2014, she was appointed Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Today, Yulia is a scientist who demonstrates to the world that Ukrainians are developing science even in times of war. She believes that young scientists will become the foundation of science and the recovery of Ukraine after the victory. In addition to her scientific work, Yulia is also active in social and political activities, such as lobbying for reforms of Ukrainian science and popularizing it in the media.

Bezvershenko also participates in various scientific events, including a recent workshop at the American Academy of Sciences, where she discussed the needs and challenges for young scientists.

Halyna Klym is one of the most cited scientists and the author of more than 280 scientific papers. She defended her doctoral dissertation at the age of 26 and subsequently won presidential grants for her research.

Halyna researches promising nanomaterials, in particular for defense equipment, and implements them in powerful information and measurement systems. She is also commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Science and Ukroboronprom.

Svitlana Zavhorodnia is a strength engineer at Progresstech-Ukraine (a Ukrainian partner of Boeing).

While studying at the Kharkiv Aerospace Institute, Svitlana was enrolled in Progresstech-Ukraine's courses. Having mastered the skills of aviation engineering, she got her dream job and became a strength engineer.

For an engineer, her job is an opportunity to constantly improve developments. Here's an example: Svitlana's project team developed a lightweight aircraft design option that was approved by Boeing. Thanks to the invention, airliners will become lighter and more fuel-efficient.

Maryna Vyazovska is a genius of modern mathematics. Vyazovska is the second woman in history to receive the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics for young scientists. She was awarded in 2022 for solving the geometric problem of packing spheres, which she had been working on for several years.

It is interesting that scientists have been trying to solve this problem for 400 years, but only a Ukrainian woman was able to solve it.

Now Maryna continues to study mathematics, but she also wants to learn something new and look for areas where her knowledge can be implemented for practical projects.

Not everyone knows that there were feminist adherents among Ukrainian women who fought for equal rights with men. Among them were writers, artists, and scientists who worked to ensure that every Ukrainian woman today could freely master any profession. Learn more about the prominent Ukrainian women here.
