According to Variety, the Emmy Awards ceremony was supposed to take place on September 18, 2023, in Los Angeles, but the TV academies and Fox, which was supposed to broadcast the show, announced that the event would be postponed. According to preliminary reports, the award ceremony will take place in January 2024.

It is worth noting that even the Covid-19 pandemic has not affected the organization and holding of the world-famous ceremony before, and the last time the date of the award was postponed was in 2001, after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. So, what is the reason for the event's cancellation and what is happening to the Hollywood film industry - read on in our article.

What is the significance of the Emmy Awards for Hollywood?

The Emmy Award is an American television award. It is considered the television equivalent of the Oscars (for movies), the Grammys (for music), and the Tony Awards (for theater. The first Emmy statuette was awarded back in 1949, and a year later, in 1950, the award was recognized as a national award. Today, the statuette award ceremony is held in 463 nominations.

Why was the Emmy Award ceremony postponed?

Back in May of this year, a wave of strikes hit Hollywood. The first to protest were screenwriters, and in July, after unsuccessful negotiations with Hollywood studios on new contract terms, they were joined by members of the SAG-AFTRA actors' union, which represents about 160,000 television and film actors.

So, given that the strikes are not even close to ending, it was decided to postpone the date of the ceremony.

It is worth noting that the last time double strikes by screenwriters and actors in Hollywood took place 60 years ago, in the 1960s.

Why are Hollywood actors and screenwriters on strike?

Hollywood screenwriters find themselves in a paradoxical situation, as they have been writing scripts for science fiction films for decades, including those about artificial intelligence taking over the world, and today they are forced to compete with "smart machines" for jobs.

Thus, the Writers Guild of America called for limiting the use of artificial intelligence for scriptwriting, but Hollywood studios did not agree to this and said they would remain open to the introduction of AI technologies into the industry. So, for the first time in 15 years, American screenwriters stopped work and took to the streets with strikes. In addition, the protesters emphasize that the text created by artificial intelligence cannot be considered "literary".

"We don't want our material to feed artificial intelligence, and we don't want to correct their sloppy drafts," writer John August said in a commentary for Reuters.

The actors, who joined the wave of protests in July, support the conditions set by the writers for the use of AI to save jobs. In addition, the actors demand higher salaries and increased residual payments from streaming services. It is worth noting that Hollywood actors went on strike for the first time in 40 years.

Why do strikes in Hollywood affect the film industry worldwide?

The members of the SAG union are not only demanding a revision of the terms of cooperation with the most famous producers of film and television programs, including Netflix, Warner Bros., Disney and other film studios, but also a number of restrictions. In particular, they do not audition for new projects, do not attend premieres, interviews and podcasts for completed films, do not participate in film festivals, award ceremonies and banquets, and do not promote film projects on social media. Therefore, not only American events are under threat, but also, for example, the two largest festivals in Venice and Toronto, which are scheduled to take place from August 30 to September 9 and from September 7 to 17, respectively.
