New Zealand is starting to issue residence permits to refugees from Ukraine who arrived on a special visa introduced last year. This was reported by Bloomberg.

How can Ukrainians extend their legal stay in New Zealand?

Foreigners who received a special Ukrainian visa before March 15, 2024, now have the opportunity to apply for a residence permit in New Zealand.

It is noted that initially this visa was granted for 12 months, but in February its term was extended for another year.

The New Zealand government reported that it had issued more than 1,510 such special visas. However, they will cease to be issued on March 15 next year.

The residence permit will allow Ukrainian migrants to legally reside and enjoy most of the rights of New Zealand citizens.

"Many of those who seek safety in New Zealand never expected to stay here for long. But with the ongoing war, we have a duty to provide them with certainty," - said Andrew Little, Minister of Immigration of New Zealand.

The procedure for obtaining a residence permit in New Zealand

The process of obtaining a residence permit for Ukrainians has become more accessible and involves several stages. Its steps include providing a medical certificate and meeting the requirements of personal identification.

At the same time, a fee of NZ$1,200 (or $708) is required to complete the procedure when applying.

The New Zealand authorities have decided to cancel the mandatory English language test and also abolished the need to have a "sponsor" ready to provide housing.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, Nana Mahuta, noted that the people of the country feel deep empathy for the situation in Ukraine. The introduction of the new visa initiative is an indicator that New Zealanders understand their responsibility and want to help.
