Germany to increase benefits for Ukrainians: what is known

Starting in 2024, Germany will introduce an increase in social assistance, known as Bürgergeld. This was announced by the Minister of Social Affairs of the country, Hubertus Heil.

What is Bürgergeld?

The German Bürgergeld initiative to help the unemployed was introduced in 2023. This program is intended for those who are unemployed and do not receive enough income to cover the cost of living.

Currently, more than 5.5 million people in Germany have access to this benefit. This approach also applies to Ukrainian refugees in the country.

It is planned to increase the amount of financial assistance by 12%, which is a consequence of inflation in Germany. Rising prices have led to a lack of resources to meet basic needs.

All types of income, assets (including those that may originate in Ukraine) and property are taken into account when determining the amount of assistance. In order to receive Bürgergeld payments, the value of the refugee's property (e.g. cars, jewelry and cash) cannot exceed EUR 15,000 per family member.

The amount of unemployment benefits is expected to increase significantly from 2024. The new amounts will be as follows:

- Single adults or single parents: 563 euros (compared to the current 502 euros);

- Children under 6 years old: 357 euros (compared to the current 318 euros);

- Children from 7 to 14 years old: 390 euros (compared to the current 348 euros);

- Children from 15 to 18 years old: 471 euros (compared to the current 420 euros).

Earlier we wrote that Bürgergeld may cancel the provision of financial assistance to Ukrainians if they do not comply with the relevant program conditions. Thus, some cases may result in fines, loss of part of the funds, or complete cancellation of financial support. Read more about what can prevent you from receiving funds in our article.

We remind you! Ukrainians who have entered Germany by their own car and stay in the country for more than a year are required to register and undergo a vehicle inspection.
