Ukrainian cinema in 2023 breaks records: which films brought million-dollar collections
Ukrainian-made films achieved considerable success in 2023, breaking pre-war records. Find out more about what kind of achievements we are talking about
In 2023, Ukrainian films broke records for box office receipts in Ukrainian cinemas. Here's a look at which Ukrainian-made films have become real blockbusters.
According to "Ekonomichna Pravda", in the first 8 months of 2023, Ukrainian-made films grossed UAH 192 million, which is UAH 12 million more than in 2019, the most successful year for Ukrainian cinema in terms of box office.
Which films showed the best results in terms of box office?
The animated film "Mavka: The Forest Song" and the film "Luxembourg. Luxembourg". Moreover, "Mavka" is still being shown on the big screens, and its box office has reached UAH 164 million.
Thus, Ukrainian films now occupy a significant part of the market, writes EP. According to Film.ua Group CEO Viktoria Yarmoshchuk, in 2022, they accounted for 27% of the box office, while before the war, this figure ranged from 4-7%.
According to estimates, by August 24, total box office receipts in cinemas exceeded the figure for the whole of 2022. However, they are unlikely to come close to 2021, let alone 2019, which is considered the gold standard for the Ukrainian industry.
However, the reason for this figure is obvious: in the first eight months of 2023, 60 films were screened in Ukraine, while before the war this figure was 160 films per year.
In addition, cinemas are operating in worse conditions due to the loss of halls in the temporarily occupied territories and a quarter of the population having moved abroad. In August 2021, there were more than 400 cinemas in the country, while only 300 screened the movie "Barbie".
By the way, earlier we told you how the Barbie doll changed from the 1950s to the movie premiere with Margot Robbie. You can read about it here.
We wrote that the Ukrainian film distribution in the first half of 2023 was marked by significant achievements, offering viewers a variety of cinematic masterpieces. During this period, several films gained considerable popularity and commercial success, becoming real box office leaders.
According to estimates, the movie "Mavka. The Forest Song" of Ukrainian cinema was a significant success, outperforming the multi-billion dollar box office collection "Avatar: The Way of Water".
In addition to "Mavka", "Luxembourg, Luxembourg" also stands out, surpassing even "The Super Mario Brothers in the Movies" in popularity.
We remind you! Today, there are many films and documentaries about the history of Ukraine and the struggle of the Ukrainian people for freedom. We tell you which films about Ukraine are really worth watching here.
