A new strain of coronavirus is actively spreading around the world, with almost 100 thousand cases of the disease reported so far. Find out more about the symptoms of the new strain and which countries are most at risk
In August 2023, the WHO assessed the risks posed by the new Pirola coronavirus strain. Based on the results of the research, experts noted that the disease needs to be monitored at the country level, as the risk of this subspecies is higher and the course of the disease can be even more severe.
The first case of the new strain (BA.2.86) was recorded in Israel, followed by the United States, Denmark and the United Kingdom. To date, the number of registered cases has reached almost 100 thousand people.
At the same time, at least 51 countries around the world have detected the incidence of the EG.5 strain, also called Eris. However, no specific symptoms or consequences of this type of coronavirus have been identified. The main difference between the EG.5 substrain is its much faster spread.
Which countries have the highest number of cases of coronavirus strain Pirola?
The new strain of coronavirus infection is actively spreading around the world. Most cases have been reported in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, South Africa, Sweden, France, Portugal, Canada, Thailand, Switzerland, Australia, Denmark, Israel, and Norway.
According to official data from the Ministry of Health, no cases of the new Pirola strain have been reported in Ukraine so far.
"According to the results of sequencing, that is, laboratory testing of samples taken from patients with COVID-19, conducted at the national reference laboratory of the Public Health Center, no cases of the Pirola strain have been registered in Ukraine. All detected mutations are currently around the Omicron strain," says Deputy Minister, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin.
However, the Ministry of Health believes that a new type of coronavirus infection may soon appear in Ukraine, as many refugees return home from abroad.

Covid-19 strain Pirole: symptoms
The most common symptoms of infection are:

– fever, fever;

– headache;

– loss of sense of smell or taste.
Eye irritation and rashes are much less common.
Vaccination against coronavirus strain Pirola
According to international health authorities, Pirola has a high mutation rate compared to other coronavirus strains. Experts suggest that there could be up to 30 changes in the protein structure of the virus. This means that the existing types of vaccine may not be effective enough in the fight against Pirola.
However, it should be borne in mind that vaccination against the usual Omicron also did not provide a 100% guarantee of protection against infection, but it did protect people from severe illness or the risk of death.
Therefore, vaccination is currently the only effective way to ensure immunity against the disease. This is especially true for people who are at risk. In particular:
– people over 60 years of age;
– people with chronic or concomitant diseases and those with weakened immune systems;
– pregnant women.
It should be noted that Germany has also recorded the progression of covid-19. Read more about who should be vaccinated against COVID this fall in Germany here. And if your COVID certificate has expired, we wrote about the algorithm of actions to renew it here.
