Today, Kyiv residents and visitors are facing changes in the public transportation fare system. These innovations, which were introduced to improve the quality of services and optimize the transport system, can be a challenge for many, reports RBC-Ukraine (Styler project).

We will tell you how the fare system in the capital has changed, whether there are ways to get around the innovations, and how you can save money while moving around the city.

What has changed in fare collection

According to the Main Information and Computing Center, from October 4, 2023, fares for all types of public transport will be charged not separately for each trip but together for every 2 trips.

Such changes apply to payment for a trip with a plastic bank card, Apple Pay, Google Play, digital transport card (if there is no purchased trip on it and the money for the trip is debited from the bank card)

Please note that payment will be made within 1 day after the trip. A passenger who does not make a second trip until the evening will receive a refund for the first trip after 21:00.

Kyiv Digital also reminded that you can pay by credit card only for one passenger. If you plan to pay for a trip for a friend or family member, you will need to use a plastic transport card or QR ticket.

How to get around the innovations

Payment for transportation using QR tickets and transport cards will not change.

To use them, you will need to scan them with a validator, and in a few minutes a record of use will appear in the corresponding program.

The KCSA reminded that confirmation of payment in a bank application or Kyiv digital application is not a confirmation of ticket validation (both by the passenger and the controller).

Confirmation applies only to the verifier (in case of repeated use) and the controller.

How to save money on public transport

The personalized multifunctional electronic municipal plastic "Kyivan Card" will help you save money on public transport.

The card can provide free travel for registered beneficiaries of the capital, or act as a classic transport ticket with the possibility of purchasing trips.

In addition, PrivatBank has recently launched a program to compensate for the cost of public transportation (if the trip was paid for through the Privat-24 app). The maximum amount of compensation under this program is no more than UAH 250 per person per month.

To pay for a trip using a QR code, you need to open the application and scan the code applied to the sticker during the trip to make a payment. After that, it is important to click "compost".

The Kyiv Digital mobile app (for Android and iOS) also allows you to purchase both individual tickets and some trips from October with additional discounts.

How to pay for travel in other cities

You can pay for public transportation in different cities of Ukraine in different ways. It all depends on the transport infrastructure and local authorities.

For example, in Chernihiv, you can pay for public transportation with a transport card, bank card, or cash.

In Rivne region, you can make non-cash payments using a bank card, mobile phone (with an NFC module), or a mobile application that allows you to pay for travel.

In Lviv, you can most often pay for a trip with a bank card, a device with an NFC module, or cash.

Chernivtsi has recently introduced one-day tickets for trolleybuses and public buses (they cost 50 UAH and do not limit the number of trips during the day).

You can pay for travel in Chernivtsi with a regular ticket (purchased in cash at a self-service terminal), a bank card, or other types of transportation using the Privat-24 app.

In Odesa, you can buy a ticket for transport using a special QR code, a bank card (or a smartphone with an NFC module), or cash.

Amid the war, public transportation in Kharkiv is still free of charge, as the Kharkiv City Council allocates funds for this purpose.

We remind you! Some cities in Europe have started charging tourist tax from visitors, with amounts ranging from 50 cents to tens of euros. Read more about the amounts involved and in which countries tourists now have to pay mandatory fees in our previous article.
