The act of genocide against the Ukrainian people, organized and carried out by the russian federation during its full-scale invasion, claimed the lives of thousands of people. In addition, the genocide of Ukrainians encompasses not only the brutal killing of civilians, but also a number of war crimes, including mass torture, deportations, sexual violence, and abductions of children

Which countries have recognized the genocide of Ukrainians?

The genocide organized by the russian army in Ukraine was the largest in Europe since World War II, and it is now partially or fully recognized in many countries.

The Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science has developed an interactive map showing the countries that have recognized the genocide committed by the russian federation in Ukraine during the full-scale invasion.

But even though russia is condemned by almost the entire world, the terrorist country continues to strike peaceful cities and civilian infrastructure, seeing no value in human lives and cynically commenting on these strikes as "precision attacks on military targets."

The most recent of these atrocious attacks was the shelling of the village of Groza in the Kharkiv region. The army of the terrorist country struck a local cafe shop where a wake for one of its residents was taking place, killing 51 people. Later, the Ukrainian authorities reported that 4 more people died in hospital from their injuries. Another 3 people are still missing. Thus, with one missile, russia killed more than half of the residents of the village of Groza.

How many civilians have become victims of the russian invasion of Ukraine?

According to data published by Statista, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has confirmed 9,614 civilian deaths during russia's invasion of Ukraine as of September 2023. However, OHCHR notes that given the occupation and inaccessibility of some areas, the actual numbers could be much higher. In addition, according to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Leonid Tymchenko, another 11,000 Ukrainian civilians are still missing.

The largest number of deaths was recorded in March 2022 - more than 3,900 - when russian troops occupied part of Kyiv region and advanced towards the capital.

OHCHR also notes that, according to preliminary data, more than 17,500 Ukrainian civilians sustained injuries of varying severity.

How many people died between 2014 and 2021 as a result of russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine?

The total number of victims of russian aggression by 2022 will reach at least 3,400, including 298 victims of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) shot down in July 2014.

The highest number of deaths was recorded between April 14 and December 31, 2014 - 2084 Ukrainian civilians. In 2015, the invasion of the eastern regions of Ukraine by russian forces claimed the lives of another 954 civilians. In 2016, 112 Ukrainians were killed, in 2017 - 117, in 2018 - 55, in 2019 - 27, in 2020 - 26, and in 2021 - 25.

It is important to note that the exact number of people killed has not yet been established, as the hybrid war waged by russia since 2014 has made it impossible to access the occupied regions.

Child of war in Ukraine: how many children has russia killed?

According to various sources, since 2014, more than 240 young Ukrainians have been killed in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Between 150 and 500 children were injured. About 50 minors are considered missing.

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, from February 24, 2022, to August 20, 2023, at least 1,618 children were injured as a result of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine, including at least 503 children killed.

Overall, children were most affected in:

- Donetsk region - 485,

- Kharkiv region - 299,

- Kyiv region - 129,

- Kherson - 121,

- Zaporizhzhia - 99,

- Mykolaiv - 97,

- Dnipropetrovs'k - 95,

- Chernihiv - 71,

- Luhansk - 67.

However, the OGPU adds that these data are not final. Work is currently underway to establish such facts in the areas of hostilities, in the temporarily occupied and liberated territories.

It is also important that about 16 thousand children were illegally deported from Ukraine to the territory of the russian federation.

The evil and darkness that russia brings to the homes of Ukrainians and the world at large cannot go unpunished, and therefore the terrorist country must be held accountable for every life it has taken and every life it has maimed.

Justice will prevail!
