In recent years, the number of flight delays in the European Union has increased more than 4 times. This information was made public by the largest EU airline association known as Airlines for Europe (A4E), which unites 70% of European air carriers.

According to A4E, on average, flight delays in the EU have increased by more than 400%, as the existing air traffic network in Europe is unable to cope with the growing demand for air travel.

"The gap between air travel demand and the infrastructural capacity of Europe's airspace appears to be widening and will not recede as the EU has failed to provide adequate airspace capacity," the association said.

This warning was issued after the publication of the latest Single European Sky annual report on the assessment of its effectiveness. The report contains the results of monitoring of the Single European Sky air navigation services.

"This is more than just a report; it is a call to action. We need to improve Europe's airspace infrastructure and implement reforms to make airlines more efficient," emphasizes Urania Georgoutsacou, Managing Director of A4E.

The main reason for the delays is insufficient air traffic control (ATC) capacity, weather conditions and other factors. The impact of the war in Ukraine is also noticeable, as noted in the report. The average duration of departure delays due to various reasons is 19.03 minutes per flight.

Among the problems with airport infrastructure, air navigation service providers (ANSPs) were unprepared for the resumption of traffic, while others suffer from network disruptions. The impact of the war in Ukraine is also having negative consequences.

"Increased passenger traffic and high demand continue to put pressure on airlines and inconvenience millions of passengers. This could have been prevented if Europe had used all possible means to improve systems and reduce the gap between demand and capacity in European airspace," the statement said.
