The Portuguese government has decided to extend the period of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees.

Here is how long Ukrainian citizens will be able to stay in Portugal.

For how long has Portugal extended temporary protection for Ukrainians?

The Portuguese government has extended the shelter for refugees from Ukraine for an additional 6 months. This decision will allow Ukrainians to stay and enjoy Portugal's support until March 24, 2024.

As you know, the first initiative to provide temporary protection to refugees from Ukraine was introduced for a year and then extended twice for another 6 months.

How many refugees from Ukraine are in Portugal?

Currently, more than 56 thousand Ukrainians live in Portugal.

According to Eurostat, most Ukrainian citizens live in municipalities such as Lisbon (over 12 thousand people), Cascais (over 3 thousand), Porto (almost 3 thousand Ukrainians), Sintra (about 2 thousand), and Albufeira (almost 1.5 thousand Ukrainians).

However, in the summer, a significant outflow of Ukrainian refugees was recorded in Portugal, and more than 4 thousand people left the country.

Observations have shown that this trend is particularly affecting women and children, who choose to return to Ukraine due to difficulties in finding housing, high rental prices, and employment problems.

Some Ukrainians choose other European countries, such as Germany or Switzerland, in search of better living conditions.

What does temporary protection give Ukrainians in Portugal?

Thanks to their respective status, Ukrainians receive social assistance in the country, which amounts to approximately 200 euros per month for adults and 100 euros per child. However, these payments are available only to those who have no other sources of income.

More information on financial support for Ukrainians can be found on the website of the Portuguese Social Service.
