Rail passengers throughout Germany are facing a large number of canceled routes due to a strike called by the GDL driver's union. This was reported by tagesschau.de and wdr.de.

Here's how long the strike will last and whether you can reschedule your trip or get a refund for the tickets you purchased due to inconvenience.

Large-scale strike: German railways cancel thousands of routes

The drivers' union is calling on all long-distance and regional transportation workers, as well as city railroad employees in Berlin and Hamburg, to take part in the strike.

In addition to Deutsche Bahn, the strike will also affect regional train operators Transdev, AKN Eisenbahn and City-Bahn Chemnitz. One of the main demands of the drivers is a reduction in working hours from 38 to 35 hours and a 555 euro pay increase.

"The train drivers' union is ruining the second weekend of Advent for millions of innocent people. A strike so close to the schedule change period is irresponsible," Deutsche Bahn responded.

The union promised that they do not plan to strike until January 7. The last time GDL went on strike at the railroad was on November 15 and 16. During the 20-hour work stoppage, 80% of intercity routes were canceled, and in some regions there was virtually no rail and electric transport.

The strike is expected to last from Thursday evening to Friday evening (December 7-8).

Passengers are given the opportunity to reschedule their trip or refund their tickets in the coming days.

During the planned strike, Deutsche Bahn will try to maintain about 20% of its long-distance traffic.
